  1. ok...so far, I've contacted BMI regarding licensing a song...they say that they don't handle 'direct to dvd' licenses...that I should contact the RIAA or the Henry Fox Assn.

I go to the RIAA and they say that I need a 'synchronization license' and that I need to contact the individual sound recording copyright owners for a voluntary synchronization license...

[sigh] How the hell am I supposed to find out the individual sound recording copyright owners for a couple Glenn Miller tunes? sheesh...he died in 1944 for criminy's sake.

Does anyone have the next step for me?

On a lighter side...the music license shouldn't be TOO much since Glenn Miller goes into public domain in less than ten years.

    Thanks for the help

  4. What a load of garbage...

I sent letters to both ASCAP and theglennmillerstore (CMG) and they both said that they only deal with public performance rights, not publishing rights.

anbody else have good leads? BMI doesn't license any Glenn Miller...

sheesh...it's no wonder people STEAL music! It's too hard to get it the legit way.

'K...for using an existing recording in a video production, you need permission from the publisher and the owner of the sound recording, which would be the record company.

For Record Company Resources (which will provide contact information for record companies) you can try online bookstores and/or libraries.

Here are some resources to contact:

PMLs license music that they own the rights to, and are fast and inexpensive for film, TV and video productions.
You might want to take this route if the other isn't fast enough.

  6. Also, if you already know what record label the song is on, I might be able to look up the contact info for you.

Well I have a question in this area....

There's a ton of music I have, lots of video game soundtracks, different songs from artists new and old and such. If I wanted to use some of these songs in my video projects for private use only, and dont plan to sell to make money from these songs, would that be ok to use or would it still be infingement? I know this can be a tricky subject, and can be a complicated topic.

Whats a shame is, the fact that you cant make up any music thats different without having to worry about stepping on anyone else's toes.

If i knew how to make my own music and such, there wouldnt be a need to worry about copyright stuff, especially if its for your own private use. Im just not good at creating music though
