  1. Hi just a few problems I am having.
First is that I have a pinnacle pctv tuner card and I am trying to play a vhs video on the pc, I can get sound but no picture.

Second is that I have got a few movies on the hard drive and have been playing the ts file in windows media player, I can get the picture but no
    sound.

I am running windows xp home edition.
    Pentium 4 3.06ghz
    768mb ram
    240gb hdd
    64mb nvidia video card

I have no codecs installed and not sure if I need any to make my problems go away and if I do what codecs do I need.

  2. Ok I have downloaded the 3divx codec and now I get picture when playing
    a video on the pc.
But I still dont get any sound when playing a movie in windows media player.
The movie is one I backed up using dvdshrink, and I doubleclick on the tsfile to play in WMP. It plays the movie fine, I get picture but no sound.

    Hello,
Have you tried ac3filter?? That might help a bit. Are they encoded in 5.1? You might need a dolby digital plug in for windows media player.

P.S. As you found out you need SOME kind of codec installed to play any audio/video file. They are what the computer needs to READ the file.

Most likley you haven't selected which input you are using. You need to select between tuner/composite/s-video (or whatever inputs there are) in the capture card configuration.

I dunno, try playing it with another player like powerDVD. If the files are DVD compliant which they should be, you should have sound.

You do unless you uninstalled them, the need to install a codec is rare. This will occur when you get a movie that was created by someone else using a specific codec. The player should give you an error stating that it can't find the codec. Look in the tools section, there's aps for determining what codec is used for a file and the most common codecs. Some codecs are propietary and have to be purchased.

Good point. I'd like to add one thing to that. I use the wintv pvr250 and it only has a svideo input jack. It comes with a rca-svideo adapter. In order to get the picture I need to select svideo+composite combo option (ie they're listed together on the same line in the menu). This might be part of your problem.
