Hi!
I'm trying to back up some files from my HD on a DVD-RW, the problem is: in 14 hours, it has only burned 30% of 4.7 GB! Ok I can understand that burning a DVD at 1x might be slow, but THAT is really slow and totally passed the remaining time indicated. I burned another DVD right before this one and it took about 4 hours (with same burner, same options, same speed, same type of DVD). I interrupted the burning 'cause this is going crazy and I thought it was OK since it's a DVD-Rw, but no! When I tried to erase the DVD, I got a message saying the DVD is already blank, but when I actually tried to burn something on it, it tells me to insert a blank recordable disc. So I erased the DVD, but it's still not a recordable disc... Before I insert a new DVD, I just want to find out what was the problem so I won't get it again.
I'm using a Plextor PX-708UF connected through USB 1.1 with Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator Home 6 that comes with it, I selected the option PowerRec (which was recommended). Here's a screen cap:
Any help appreciated, thanks!

I just took a look at a page about the Plextor PX-708UF. The specs call for connection to Firewire or USB2.0. If you've got it connected to USB1.1, that is probably your problem.

for you dvd-rw not recognized any more, it's probably a bad media, some can't be burned more than one time ! but it can also be a hardware (burner) prob
if it take 14 hours to burn it's probably not because of usb, it's perhaps a burner problem. take it back to your reseller. -
@broadway: I know, but it's also compatible with USB 1.1 though it's slower but not THAT slow.
@daredevil: I used a Memorex DVD-RW (they may not be the highest quality, but they can't be that bad right? Unless it's a unique case with my DVD). I'll give it another try and if it's still not working properly, I'll take it back. -
If you have a friend that has a new machine try it on a USB 2.0 port and see if it runs better.
Or, spend $29.00 and buy a Fwire port and try that.... will be faster than USB -
the problem is the USB 1.1, the burner is fine, I would suggest you get a FIREWIRE CARD and use that instead of a USB PORT CARD. there are more compatiblity issues when using USB PORTS. FIREWIRE is better to use less compatiblity issues with hardware and software. do a search in here & you'll see that some have had compatibilty issues with USB PORTS for EXTERNAL BURNERS. take a look at this thread in cdfreaks.com:

good luck!

I'll try what I can from what you have suggested, thanks guys!
BTW, I used Nero disc-info feature to see my DVD-RW and it DOES have a session on it, I don't know why Roxio didn't erase it correctly. -
uninstall ROXIO and then uninstall NERO BURN , then use NERO CLEAN TOOL if you aleady have NERO installed. ROXIO software can cause conflicts with other software and hardware. here is the link for NERO CLEAN TOOL: http://www.nero.com/us/631940828445001.html
Good luck! Lataz! I'm off to work!

update: I just got an answer from Plextor tech support (kinda impressed, they replied within 4h and didn't beat around the bush...), well apparently Memorex is not on their compatibility list (though I did succeed to burn my previous DVD) and they also told me what I already knew (USB 1x is slow yadda yadda yadda, get a USB 2x). Ok fine, guess I'll have to spend some money again
igh: (probably on a FireWire instead). Wouldn't the world be a whole lot easier if everyone did the same thing, then we wouldn't have those d*mn compatibility problems!
@budz: if I uninstall roxio and nero, which program I'm gonna use to burn my DVDs? lol! Seriously, should I reinstall Roxio or Nero, which one is better? -
I have talked to the verbatim coporate store and they say 8.5Gb discs will be available the first week in august other than the one you can buy in the solution kit. Does anyone know anything about the prices per disc. I have heard like $15 a pop but i could be wrong. Please let me know if you have any info. Thanks

I've burned DVDs at 1x over ethernet 10 and the speed is close to USB1.1. The buffer underrun repeatedly activates but it only takes about 1:20 to burn a full DVD that way. There's something else going on besides the interface if it's only 1/3 done after 14 hours

Ok guess what? I gave it another try with a new Memorex DVD, same files, same options, same program, didn't touch anything, and as it turns out, the burning was completed in 2 hours. I think I'm going to buy some new DVDs compatible with my writer this time and do some tests to see if the problem really comes from the DVD. If it still doesn't work correctly, then I'll reinstall the software and get a FireWire. Thanks everyone for your help!

Since one answer from someone else talks about removing Roxio and using Nero for burning, hopefully my question/problem can be answered here. I also have Plextor burner, comes with Roxio software which is not one of my favorites, and much prefer Nero for burning. There is no compatibility problem with burning CD's, but there is with DVD's. Unless I am missing something, if I get rid of Roxio and use only Nero, I am unable to format my CD/RW and/or DVD/RW disks. I want to use the DVD RW disks to store files or tsf from one computer to another. Thought I had problem solved, keep Roxio on one computer and Nero on other, but when I copy files to DVD RW disk from computer with Roxio, then try to copy from the disk to other computer, it does not work. Could I maybe do a burn of files I want to move onto the DVD Disk and if so, then how would I actually get them on to the other computer. Most ofl the files I am transfering back and forth are movies and occasionally software exe files.
Sorry this is so long and if I am out of line posting here, please accept my apology and point me to where I should put this.
Thanks -

I do use NERO to burn CD's my problem or questions revolves around the other part of what I wrote.

I just don't see how I can get rid of Roxio and still be able to format the rw disks
