  1. Maybe I bought a dud. But i'll just begin to buy higher quality products. Sony is the highest we can go right? You go for the deal and a couple months later your remote just doesn't want to work, even after you change the batteries in the darned thing. Please let me know if there is another type of remote I can use for my dvd player. or else i'll just go and buy a better dvd player. This is very frustrating when you rent a movie and magially your remote doesn't work. And the dvd player only has three buttons. Play > Stop > Pause.
What the hell am I supposed to do with those.

  2. Buy a generic remote control unit that lists your Magnavox as one of the supported brands.

General rule of thumb: as far as quality goes, Magnavox is junk. It's one of the old brand names that sold out long ago to marketers that rebrand the cheapest equipment they can find in the world market. If I were looking for the cheapest I could get, then I would consider Magnavox, but only if it was half the price of the best Japanese brands and I could return it to the store if I got a dud.

Sony is better, but far from the best. They lost their way on quality control 10 years ago, fell way down in consumer frequency-of-repair ratings, and haven't struggled back into the top rank again yet. Personally I wouldn't buy Sony if there were any other Japanese brands available at or near the same price. That's a shame, since Sony often has the most interesting technology, but I've been burned once too often by Sony gear that failed.
