I've downloaded VirtualDub and am having some trouble. I've already captured a avi2 via Scenalyzer using my Canopus ADVC-100. When trying to open this avi file in VirtualDub I get the following error.

Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'dvsd' (unknown)

VirtualDub requires a video for windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.

Also when I open VirtualDub, the GUI is blank, except for the top tool bar and bottom tool bar. I’m not sure if this is normal.

I've never used this program before; a little help would be greatly appreciated.

Install a DV codec. Panasonic and Canopus make one. Check the Tools section at left. And no, there is nothing wrong with your Vdub. That's how it opens.

I don't understand exactly what you mean. If you mean to use all your filters available for each project, then the answer is no. Use the ones suitable for each project. If you want recommendations for all the filters, I can't answer that, since I haven't used all of them myself.

Virtualdub is a great program. You can find some guides to the left.<<<

Filters, there are a lot. I commonly use the HSV and brightness/contrast for color control. You might look at this site for other filters:http://neuron2.net/ . There are others if you do a Google search for 'Virtualdub filters' and maybe some advice on what to use.

Be advised that any filter will slow down Virtualdub. If you have noisy VHS tapes, it may take +several hours to clean them up and a lot of HD space.

Sorry, my mistake. At first look, I didn't see any filters; I thought I had to download them all. I've found what I'm looking for and working on the AVI file now. I needed the "Null Transform" filter. Looks like I'll see the finished project in about 3 hours or so.

Well this was interesting; VirtualDub did error itself out due to insufficient disk space. My original capture is 25 gigs; the VirtualDub correction used 87 gigs and didn't finish the job. This program uses an incredible amount of disk space.

I wonder If I can capture the tape again via VirtualDub and use the Null filter and produce a smaller file?

Redd : What did you use for compression? The default compression setting will give you a RGB very large file.

You can set it to DV if you have the codec installed or, my preference if you are going for DVD format encoding, frameserve to TMPGEnc or other encoders. That way you don't need to generate an in-between file that you don't need and will take up HD space.

EDIT: No, Virtualdub will not 'capture' DV.

And how is the audio done? The guide says it has to be done separately. Does this create any OOS, and is this done still using either VirtualDub or TMPGenc?

Obviously I’ve not done this process before.
