  1. I don't like how I can't use the computer for other things while I capture from a DV cam in Premiere Pro - it stops the capture as soon as I click somewhere else.

Is there a way to shut off this "feature"? I figure that as long as I am not dropping frames, then I should be able do other things like surf (this site!) or whatever.

I too have noticed this peculiarity when dealing with Premiere Pro. The the capture module in version 1.0 stops recording whenever you minimize or select another window. If it helps, version 1.5 (which you probably don't have) will allow you to select another window (and thus run things on top of your capture), although it still stops capping when you minimize.

If you want to cap video while you do other things, make sure to disable any type of video preview while you cap (this is especially important in Premiere, which takes up a significant amount of CPU time with the preview enabled), or use a slimmed down preview like the one in WinDV. Two programs which I have found to cap in the background well are DVIO, which is a minimal package for DV capture, and IUVCR, which is a more fully-featured recorder, although it does cost money after a 30 day (?) trial period.

Sorry I don't have a good answer to your question. Hope this helps.

  3. thanks for your response.

Maybe in general I should use a different program to capture DV, one that won't stop capping if I want to multitask - there should no difference in the captured DV between Premiere and another program... DV is DV, right?

    Hello,
I don't have expeirence with DV but I believe Pinnacle Studio and Ulead DVD movie factory both capture from DV. I think Roxio does also. Give the trial versions of each a try and see if you can multitask Good luck.

I use Scenelyzer to do my DV captures....an excellent program. However to be honest, if you are doing video work you should not do anything else anyway when you are either capturing, editing, etc. However since I have a laptop in addition to my desktop system, I use my laptop system to surf, do other things and leave my desktop strictly for video work.

I have however been able to capture with Scenelyzer and do other things on my desktop without any capturing interruptions or dropped frames (not internet stuff though...dont need my new system infected with viruses and crap). After capture then I import my stuff to Premeire.

  6. VTM - Bottomline, am I right to conclude that as long as the capture isn't dropping frames, I can do whatever I want?
