  1. I'm a total newbie when it comes to this sort of thing like ripping and whatnot. I wanted to learn how to rip DVDs and convert them into AVIs/Xvid/etc.

The ripping part worked, (used DVD Decrypter) then I downloaded the other components necessary using one of the help guides that explains how to convert VOB files to Xvid.

First of all, about Virtual Dub. I have 1.5.10, and the guide said to download the nandub.rar file, which I don't really know what that is , or where I should put it. I'm wondering if I should just uninstall VDub and get Virtual Dub Mod which has that nandub thing incorporated into it?

I have AVISynth 2.5. To start, what do I need in my plugins? I have that DGDdecode.dll in there right now. Do I need MPEG2Dec3.dll as well?

I was reading up on the how to guide, about how to make the scripts. I did the "Version" test and the example color tests and they worked fine in VDub and in WMP.

When it came to making my own scripts, ie: using AVISource("file path")
and tried to open in either Vdub or WMP, they both closed automatically.
I followed suggestions on the sites, by putting the movie file in the folder where the avs file was, but I keep getting this problem. I'm only trying to open simple things right now like some AVIs I downloaded.

Example: I downloaded the AVIsynth program into My Documents, and placed both the avs file and the movie(fanmade) I wanted to run in there as well.

I typed AVISource("C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\My Documents\ddp-LollipopsSunshineAndrrrRRRrrr") and saved it as an avs file.

It showed up as the script icon, but when trying to open it in WMP or Vdub, they just closed without doing anything. Am I doing something wrong? I've looked around for hours for problems like this, but I haven't found this particular situation.

Sorry this is so long. I'm not that good at getting to the point with this type of thing.

It seems all you are trying to do is convert your DVDs into DivX. Use VirtualDub mod. load the VOB, select your DivX codec, save as under a new file name.

Empty your plugins folder and try loading an AVS file into VDub.

    If you're a newbie I would use FairUse 0.44

    http://www.cdrinfo.pl/software/stronaid.php?id=4009180226

to do my DVD to DivX conversions. This will do it all - rip, convert - perfect results. Then once you get into the swing of things and want more control over your conversions and like tweaking lots of different settings then take Tommyknocker's advice.

  5. FairUse or anything else I might have to pay for aren't options for me right now, unfortunately.

I managed to get the file to show up in VDub mod, but I don't know how to convert it yet, or add audio. I guess I have to hunt around for a help file or something.

No other converters seem to want to work for me. I tried AutoGK, but I couldn't get anything to show up.

Did you try to save the video under a new file name once you selceted the DivX codec? To add your own audio, there is a shareware program called Gold Wave I like. You load your audio into it, edit it the way you want, save as a wave file.

Go back to Virtual Dub mod, after loading your original video, select Audio=>Wave Audio, then proceed with choosing your codec, and saving under a new file name.

Oops, sorry. I was reading several different things at once, and they all kinda got jumbled.

This works pretty good. I'll have to try a longer DVD next time.

I guess figuring out how I want to edit things will have wait.

    Thanks.
