Is there a setting in Windows Media Player to automatically switch to full-screen (as if you pressed Alt-Enter) as soon as a video starts playing?
Please don't advise other software -- I know about WMP's shortcomings -- but different software is not an option in this case.

I know you said other software is not an option, but I will say anyway...
If it is a matter of not being able to install other software due to user level, many of the players do not need to be installed. You can just run them from the executable (like zoomplayer).
Anyway, do a search for command line parameters for WMP maybe there is one that automatically set fullscreen playback.
