Ok, here is the thing...I bought a movie in a "bargain bin" at a local store for $5 and when I got home I found out it was in PAL format. However, I'm in Canada so my region is NTSC.
I was just wondering if anyone could tell me the best way to back this up so that it will play on my standalone DVD player. I understand that I will probably have to re-encode, but I was just wondering the best way to keep quality. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help!!!

this has been covered so much that I hate to even respond. Oh well another post for me. Look up this topic and then if you have a specific question people will be glad to answer.

Buy a cheap DVD player that does PAL. Easiest option.
Otherwise, follow xesdeeni's guides:

If u really want to back it so it can play on all ur NTSC DVD players, then either re-do PAL to NTSC conversion (long process) or u can do what I did (ghetto convserion
) . I bought a DVD recorder from Future Shop, a Daytek (oem Liteon 5001) for $350cdn and use it to copy PAL to NTSC. Not a true digital transf, but a anolog S-vid and anolog audio (Stereo) copy to the NTSC DVD+RW and then used something like DVD shrink to re-authour (cut function) to what I want. U'll loose the menus, digital AC-3/DTS and extras but if ur just intrested in the movie and stereo then its OK. U'll loose the chapters by default but the DVD recorder will just put in its own at the specified time that u selected. You can be creative and do your own chapter using the cut feature in shrink, but it can be a long process. Its simple and give decent results. But U still need a DVD player that can play and convert PAL to NTSC output to use as input for the DVD recorder. Any of the cheapo DVD players ($50-$100 mainly Chinese ones) will play everything will do. This was an added benifit, I didnt buy it to do this, it was for getting stuff off my PVR to DVD. But hey, its a lot easier then spending hours doing a PAL to NTSC digital conversion and hoping it will turn out OK (everything sync'd). Too bad most of the DVD recorders dont have a optical/coaxel digital sound input so ur stuck with anolog stereo. The Daytek will play PAL DVD's and almost every other format except Divx too.
