I need to know if you people with Windows XP, how long does it take urs to load up?
Upgrading from Win ME to Win Xp was the best thing I did but I dislike it taking 4 mins. I know the 4 mins is checking for errors, it comes up with Microsoft Windows XP Professional logo in the middle with a bar running below it.
By the way I have a Intel Celeron 500mhz 160mb machine.

You can edit the registry for faster loading.

you need to use this little proggie
speeds it

enjoy or not who really cares ??? -
Takes me about 45 seconds now - about half of what it took in 98.
If XP is slower to boot than 98/ME, something is wrong.

Thats why you never do an upgrade..yeah something is wrong..mine is in the 40 sec range as well.

on a amd 900 it took me (before i ditched it) 15 to 25 seconds to get past the logo.

Whoa... four minutes to boot up? Heeeeeeell no. Try 10-25 seconds! XP boots way faster than Windows 9x and 2K did for me on the same system...

My boot drive is a Seagate Cheetah X15 (a 15000 rpm SCSI drive) and it takes just a few seconds to load XP. I've booted other Windows OS's on the same computer, and they all took noticeably longer to load. Windows Millenium is probably the next-fastest.

Celeron 400 (OC to 600), 160 Mb RAM, Quantum Fireball 20G 5400 RPM, approx 45 sec boot time. Sounds like you may have some problem.

4 minutes, ouch. you mentioned checking for errors, you mean that when you boot scandisk comes up everytime? Otherwise the only thing that feasibly is slowing you down is what is being loaded at startup. As someone else mentioned you should always do a full install instead of an upgrade, upgrades are extremely buggy. You could also have something that isn't quite compatible with xp being loaded hence causing problems. Also does it take 4 minutes to get to the logon screen or to get fully into windows?
Another thing is that you are probably running on a fat32 partition given you upgraded from winme, if you convert that over to ntfs, it will assist in many ways, not just with booting. I personally would backup the essentials that you want and format and install fresh. Its the best way.

old fart, I believe windows xp already uses the fastboot program. At least I'm 95% sure it does. LOL.

With ME my computer took a minute and a half.. Now with XP this P4 1.5ghz loads in about 38 seconds. So i think this machine must either be seriously underpowered or there is a significant problem in the system.

thanx for the tips, i've now made a multi-boot on my system with Win ME and Win XP. XP still takes 4 mins to load up. I'm going to try all ur solutions to solve the problem.
I formated my C: drive which had the upgraded from Win Me to Win XP and then installed Win Me to it. I didnt upgrade it, but I put XP on the other partition which is D: and now I have a choice. -
I've tried the BootVis_File prog and it doesnt work or i can't use it. I still can't get it to load up faster than 4mins.
I only use XP for TV capture anyway
