You can copy TV shows to the Hard Drive, but can you then burn the ones you want to keep to the DVD recorder, or is the HD just for temp shows that you can eliminate later? If the HD has no ability to burn to the DVD recorder, what good is it besides a temp bin? Dumping through a fire wire is another possibility, but that means a computer must be nearby. I want the recorder to be independent of the computer regarding proximity. I can edit the burned DVD in the computer separately.

The purpose of the HDD in DVD recorders is to do just what you are talking about... recording to the HDD, do simple editing (cutting out commercials, etc.), then burn to a DVD. The HDD can be used simply as a DVR/Tivo time shifting recorder, as well.
