  1. Hi,

    Can someone help me please?

Have got a NEC ND-2510A & a LG GSA 4040B witha a Jetway socket A KT266b Motherboard, AMD XP 2100, 512 MB PC133 Ram, 64MB Geforce 4 MX440 graphics card, Western Digital 40GB 7200RPm Hard drive & another 60Gb hard drive running Win XP & my problem is that both my DVD writers only write at 2x!

Have installed new drivers for the LG but not the NEC & have just run a speed check on Nero & it came up saying "Can only write at 2x instead of 4x because speed of data source is too slow"

I am writing to Ritek G04 as well.

    Please Help!!

    Thanks

Make sure your drives have DMA enabled on them.

Last time I had a slow burn process was due to heat. The heat sink had fallen of the processor. I would check your fans. The processor could be throttling back.

  4. Hi,

Thanks for the quick replies guys.

On my IDE Channels they are set to "transfer modeMA if available" & in "Current transfer mode:Multi-word DMA mode 2"

Have checked fan & that seems fine too.

  5. Using MSCONFIG or a similar utility check to make sure that no programs other than those that you NEED to have running are starting up with the computer. Here's a breakdown of what each program that could be installed on your machine does:
    http://www.sysinfo.org/startupinfo.html

Run a virus scan on the machine. I run the following three, each one can find different problems and has it's strengths and weaknesses:
    McAfee Freescan: http://download.mcafee.com/
    Symantec Securitycheck: http://www.symantec.com/securitycheck
    Trend Housecall: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Then run spybot software, again I personally use three. You can search for them at download.com. Spybot: Search and Destory, Adaware, and Pest Patrol.

Now your machine should be running much faster if you've never done any of this before. Reinstall your burning software. Identify your chipset (Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager... company listed under "System Devices"). Install any chipset software from that company:
    Via: www.viaarena.com
    Intel: http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/
    nVidia: http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

Those are the common ones, but there are others. There are risks involved with this process, so create a windows restore point. If you are uncomfortable, ask a friend or family member whos done it before to assist.

Run ForceASPI to reinstall the ASPI layer:
    http://radified.com/ASPI/forceaspi.htm

Disconnect all optical drives, boot up and then shut down. Reconnect them to different ports and boot up - see what happens.

That's what I would try first.

    Best of Luck,

You may also want to check and make sure DMA is on in your Bios as well.

Are you burning files from one of your harddrives or burning on-the-fly (directly from another disc/drive) ?
If you are burning from a harddrive, your harddrive might be heavily fragmented, which could also cause this type of issue.
Defragment your drives and ensure that DMA is also enabled for the harddrives.
If you are testing by burning with source files on one hard drive, test again by moving the files over to the other hard drive and burning again.

You can also disable Antivirus software while burning to ensure it does not interfere.

  9. Hi again,

Have got the NEC burning at 4x speed now but only when the file is on one of the two hard drives, the one that is DMA enabled & it would be only the 40 gig drive, the other one is an IBM Deskstar & I can not change it to DMA through device manager, is there any other way I can change it?

    Thanks

Most likely needs to be changed in the computer BIOS, although might be a chipset driver issue. You need to find out how to change that setting for your particular computer. Contact Jetway for more info, or check the board manual.

  11. You can also try physically disconnecting the drive, reconnecting it, and then attempting to enable DMA on the drive in Windows again.

If this does not work, you can also try a new IDE cable.
Try to use an 80 wire UDMA cable.
