hey,
i gotta dvd that i wanna copy. i'm new to this so be pateint. Do i use dvd decrypter to rip the dvd and have the 4 pieces (vob). then use tmpgenc dvd author to burn it to a 4.7g dvd disk?

Depends on the DVD. Most newer DVDs are too big to fit on one DVD disc. You'll need to use some sort of transcoder like DVD Shrink to compress the data to fit. DVD decrypter is a great program but it will not compress your DVD. It can rip for sure and burn a disc though.
DVD Author is a great program that can burn discs, create menu's etc, but again your DVD data has to be small enough to fit. Author will not compress your video for you.
If this is a retail disc, I'd suggest using DVD Shrink. It's easy to use for newbs and has a bunch of options. It can burn too if you have Nero, but after it does it's job you can use any burning application to author the VIDEO_TS folder to a disc.
