  1. I was just wondering, and haven't been able to find the answer - if you are copying a DVD5 to a DVDR is there any reason to use DVD-Decrypter? I mean if you just copy the vobs to your harddrive with Explorer and burn them to a DVDR they should still play on a standalone as it will decrypt them while playing as with any other DVD right? or are the files somehow missed up by just copying them with Explorer? Or am I totally missing something?

Go ahead and try it. The encryption is what prevents you from just copying the files directly off the disk. Without decrypting, all you can do with a DVD is watch it.

    Hrm.

The content is encrypted. You CAN copy the files off but they won't be watchable any more.

I am given to understand that the encryption keys are embedded on the disc in an area which cannot be copied.

All CSS encrypted DVDs have the decryption keys stored in the lead-in-area of the DVD, which is generally inaccessible. When you copy the data, you don't copy the keys, and even if you could copy the keys, DVD-/+R discs are made so that it is impossible to write in this lead-in-area. So you can't make a DVD-/+R disc CSS compatible, hence the need to decrypt the data before you burn your backup.

ElQuapo, what is denoted above is absolutely correct for commercial DVD's that include the CSS protection.... but should the DVD not have any CSS encryption then yes, you can just copy the file with Explorer to your hard drive.

Whenever I drag and drop a vob file from an encrypted disk to my hard drive it gives me an error and the file is never copied.

    adam,

That seems to be hit or miss depending on Operating System, and DVD drive. Some people can just copy the files... and get several gigabytes of useless data. Others can't copy them at all. It probably has a lot to do with how well-equipped your OS is to handle DVD content.
