  1. Hi all,

Any ideas why Quicktime Player won't open .avi files on WinXP? I can open the files fine on my Win2K PC, but get ".avi is not a file that quicktime understands" when I've tried on two different WinXP PC's.

Using Quicktime 6.5.1, one WinXP has Service Pack 1 the other doesn't. Win2K machine has Service Pack 3.

    Any help appreciated.

    Cheers,

    NiVZ

  2. *.avi is a container that is used with many codecs. The file is likely xvid or divx. If you don't have these codecs installed, they won't be able to play. May I also suggest another media player too, such as media player classic, or zoom player. To check what kind of file it is use gspot o avicodec.

  3. Sorry, forgot to mention the codecs. The .avi uses Cinepak for the Video codec and PCM Stereo 44.1KHz for the audio.

What really confuses me is I can open the Sample.mov in Quicktime export it as a .avi using Cinepak and PCM but Quicktime won't load the Sample.avi it just wrote itself!!

I'm using this to convert media onto my mobile phone. At the moment I'm using Quicktime cos the audio is better quality than the Nokia convertors. Problem is Quicktime won't load RM or ASF so I use EO Video to convert RM or ASF to AVI. Then load the AVI in Quicktime and convert to .3gp

    Cheers,

  4. Sorry I can't be of more help, if it was standard xvid or divx, I might have been able to. But unfortunately, I've never heard of those codecs before.
