  1. How do I join several mpgs into 1 big (well, 150MB is not THAT big) mpg with the smallest possible loss of quality?
I don't know what kind of mpg it is, but they are all of the same type.

I have tried TMPGenc, but I think it re-encodes the files. Anyway the finished mpg file was far more 'blocky' than the original (in full screen).

  2. In TMPGEnc, go to File > MPEG Tools > Merge & Cut. It certainly doesn't re-encode anything and doesn't decrease the quality. However, the first few frames of the second segment could look blocky for a split second.

  3. That's funny, beacuse I lose the sound when joining in TMPGenc.
Also, the finished file looks more 'blocky', but maybe that's just me.
And what do I do in case my mpg-type is not supported?

  4. Well, of course it expects a standard MPEG file, not a VOB or anything like that. You have a chance to mess up MPEG header though by selecting wrong type in the drop-down box on that screen. For a regular DVD-compliant video, it should be set to MPEG-2 Program.

  5. Try Simple File Joiner. Free and works for me...

  6. Thanks! Simple File Joiner did the trick.
Really easy, fast, clean interface. It even sorts the files in correct order (as opposed to TMPGenc).

I tried TMPGenc again last night. I found that my files were VCD-compliant, and chose MPEG1-VCD from the dropdown menu. When finished rendering, I had no sound in the joined file. I still find it hard to believe that TMPenc joins these files losslessly.

  7. No sound in merged files when using TMPGenc typically occurs when the sound is Dolby ac3. TMPGenc can read ac3 in a VOB and extract to WAV, but TMPGenc cannot generate ac3 and thus loses sound when you use TMPGenc to join files. You could demux the ac3, convert to mp2, and re-mux, then re-convert to ac3, or use the aforementioned filejoiner.

    Hello!
I have also tried TMPGenc and the end result was the same no sound so thanks for the link and advice though I really liked using TMPGenc

  10. False alarm with Simple File Joiner. Still no success in joining my mpgs.
Both Camel's MPEGJoin and Simple File Joiner were unsuccessful. It turned out that the 'stiching points' were garbeled for about 15 secs with both progs. And TMPGEnc gives me no sound. My files are not ac3. They're just regular mpeg-1 sound (VCD-compatible).

I am still looking for a failsafe method or program for (almost) lossless mpeg joining!

  11. Womble mpg-vcr joins mpgs seemlessly with no re-encode.
