  1. FFMPEGX is great. With FFMPEGX0.9a, I'm frustrated that when I have a file that's 23.976 (NTSC Film) FPS, and I want to make sure the file is converted to 29.97, I can't seem to do that. The presets are for the original frame rate of the program. If i attempt to click on the FPS window, and I say NTSC 29.97, it won't work. The whole thing encodes, but I ended up with a m2v + mp2 that was different lengths when I drop into DVDSP (as .ac3 file). The m2v was much longer than the converted .ac3.

To do this, I actually have to go to a PC and do TMPGenc!

Oh, wait a minute. Is this the option "Undo 3:2 pulldown"? Will that encode the file BACK to 29.97fps? Thanks.

You're still using 0.9a? Isn't that like 12 versions out of date ...?

  3. You should keep NTSC FILM as framerate and enable 3:2 pulldown. The result will play at NTSC framerate.

  4. thank you. But, by default Set 3:2 is enabled under options and the resulting video (I AM going by memory here) is the same framerate as its input, in this case 23.97 NTSC Film.

What happens if I input an NTSC Film source and DESELECT Set 3:2?

My goal, of course, is to generate a result of NTSC 29.97 fps.

If I allow the video to remain at 23.97 fps, I can see the defects on the video. I can see the pixellation, etc. on walls and backgrounds. File size tends to be smaller as well. I need the best option of 29.97 for better quality encoding. And on DVD, I have the space for that.

  5. When you encode at NTSC FILM rate and enable the 3:2 pulldown flag, the video is stored at NTSC FILM rate, but the player (software player or hardware player) will play it at NTSC rate. This is the most common way of encoding a NTSC DVD.

  6. ...so there's no technique to resample at 29.97fps, which is what I want? (And yes, NTSC Film does play fine on the player, but as I mentioned, the slower FPS results in a video that's not as well encoded because I can see the pixellation and lower quality...)

At the moment, I'm annoyed that I can only do this on PC's TMPGenc Plus. Over there, I can tell it to take the 23.97fps and make it a 29.97fps video and the quality is quite good.

But figuring out the best bitrate, I have to use FFMPEGX's bitrate calculator...

    - NTSC FILM w/3:2 "is" 29.97 fps.
    - The pixellation cannot be result of a framerate issue.
    - Changing framerate always result in loss of quality.
