I'd like to capture some NTSC tapes on my Pinnacle DV-500 card.

But as i live in Europe I have an PAL VCR. It has an "Play NTSC on PAL" feature, which i use to play the tapes on my TV.

If try to capture this tape, when I use the PAL-setting (525 lines) everythring screws up, and I lose a lot of frames.

When I use the NTSC-setting (625 lines), which seem incorrect to me, as te VCR should output a PAL signal, the image seems OK, and no dropped frames, however it's in Black & White (the original tape is colour).

Anybody knows this problem / solution?

I am having the same problem. My Card also allows capture in NTSC, but as NTSC converted to PAL is coming out of the VCR, my card just screws up. Tried both settings (PAL & NTSC) - nothing.

    Awaiting useful tips.

  3. It is not NTSC converted to PAL coming out of your VCR,
but signal level adjusted PAL 60 which is mutant PAL signal levels at
    NTSC 60 frames per second.

(The reason is that true (digital) NTSC -> PAL converter run around $300
and your VCR converts only signal level (not frame rate) because
many TV sets can play 60fps )

unless your card can capture 60 fps PAL you need NTSC VCR

or trick it with PAL -> NTSC convertor (sounds weird but could work):
    Tape(NTSC) -> VCR (PAL60) -> Convertor PALtoNTCS -> NTSC 60

Then TMPGEnc NTSC source -> PAL output

Well, at least I'm getting to understand the problem a bit, and know what PAL60 means. There's even a mention of this in the manual (didn't knew what it meant).

But if I understand correctly I will at least need some hardware device to convert the signal before I put it to my capturecard.
As far as I can tell, I cannot set it up to capture 60fps PAL, the PAL/NTSC switch only seems to do something with the scanlines. (But why should I lose colour then?)

I don't think the suggested software solution "Motion Perfect" would solve my problem, as I will first need to get a correctly captured file (either PAL or NTSC) in my computer.
Converting NTSC to PAL is no problem then, I can use TMPGEnc or whatever, same as I use to convert DVD MPG's.

As a hardware-solution seems rather expensive, I will have to give it some more thought (The "Convertor PALtoNTCS" vsv mentions is hardware as well I guess).
Testing is temporarily off anyway, as my computer crashed with another hardware problem (not related), and I had to take it back to the shop (hope to get it returned netxt week).

    Thnx. for the input anyway.
