  1. Compusa has this burner for $80 after MIB's. The 8x varient is the awesome NEC 2500a which I just got and have flashed for DL/Riplock/RC1 unlock. Who makes this new 12x version? Is it a new NEC or something? I cant even find it on the Mad Dog site yet.

Matching up the specs with the DVD Writers page, it looks like either an Artec or an Optorite. I'm not sure if anyone rebagdes Artecs.

I have a MD CDRW/DVD-Rom drive that is a rebadged Artec, so I'd bet that is the 12 drive they have inside, but you never know.

  7. Superlink and 40x CD-R speed indicate that it's an Artec and their burner is horrible according to the comments I've read about it. Poor media support, slow and it doesn't burn a single disc at 12x with the current firmware(!) Buy the Mad Dog Megastor 8x DL writer instead which is a NEC ND-2510A, a much better burner.

Two different models. One is actually a 2510 right out of the box, no DL hack needed. No point in upgrading though. Not worth giving up DL for a 12x Artec either.

This supposed "12X" burner actually has NO 12X write strategies in the current firmware!
    False advertising at its' best!
