  1. Hi gang,

I'm just starting to arcgive all of my old stuff onto DVDs.

How do you label your disks? Is there any way to mark/print/stick something onto a DVD disk to indicate what it contains or do I just label the jewel case and leave the disk alone? Any specific "dos" or "don'ts" when it comes to labeling disks?

    Thanks.

I usually use a Sharpie and write on the disc. Unless I want to get really fancy, then I print on Avery 8692 and 5692 CD/DVD labels and stick them to the discs.

Inland CD pens from RIMA. I recently bought a Maxell CD pen which is the exact same thing as the Inland. They are ok but kind of small and hard to write with.

After getting slammed hard here for asking if sharpies were ok, I decided to not risk it and get a specialized product.

  4. Never use lablels that stick to DVDs. see

If you want to label them then use either Sharpie permenatent marker or use printable DVDs with a printer like Epson R200 or R300.

  6. Just a regular permanent marker with a fine tip. I assume that's what you guys mean by a "Sharpie" ?

Right now, I'm using a pack of bog standard Staedltler Lumocolor (sic) markers from a stationers for my own stuff, and Ive just invested in an R200 for show-pieces which has been pushing out some truly stunning results.

  7. Get a Epson printer 200,300 or 800 and print direct to printable disks. Cannon also do one....
If i have to use a pen i use a Staedtler permanent Lumocolor Fine. Just like a normal pen and very easy to write with.
    Not bothered by small problems...

  8. i used to use sticky labels. so far so good, about 200 of my dvds have sticky labels, all plays perfect even though i burnt the disc to the max. plays fine on my magnavox, my crappy apex dvd player, and my ps2.

but now i use the epson r200 to print my dvds. nice & amazing results from a printer under a $100 at the time i bought it.

Just the type you described; "Sharpie" is one trade name for such a marker; made by Sanford.

Sharpie all the way. Quick and easy, and I'm not as concerned with how it looks.

@888888 I hope you weren't slammed for using sharpies on DVDRs... there's some concern that they'll eat away at the data layer on CDRs, but no danger at all to DVDs because the data layer is sandwitched between two layers of .6mm plastic. I personally haven't had a problem with sharpie-marked CDRs.

  14. I use the Memorex label system with an Epson 880 printer.
After several hundered DVDs I have not had any problems.
Just make sure that the label is completely dry before applying.
I use only Memorex branded labels.

    TDK CD-Writer

The BLACK one works great, but is getting harder to find. I think these may have been discontinued. The 4-pack containing multicolored ones is NOT as good.

I've tried other types/brands of "CD Marking Pens" and they all have been inferior to the TDK one.

Theoretically, I guess that would be best, but practically I'm not sure using a CD Marking Pen is any worse. Based on LordSmurf's recommendation, I am going to start trying Ultrafina Black Sharpie pens if I am unable to find anymore TDK CD Marking Pens.

DO write using a CD Marking pen or a Sharpie with the finest point possible.
DON'T use really thick ink like a Marks-A-Lot chisel point.
    DON'T use unbalanced labels.

I'm a hub label user, myself. I posted one of my labels. Could someone please post a Sharpie-labeled disk, please.

I print a label for the jewel case. No labels, ink jet printing or sharpies ever touch the disc

which printer do you use for hub printing?
is there an option that allows you to hub print, or do you have to configure the cover to fit the hub.
also does printing on the hub alone affect playability in any way?

I use my Canon i865 to print direct to disc. Brilliant.

Before that, just your average thick texta/whyteboard marker.

I know people who have used sticky labels only to come unstuck.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I think you set that in your printing program.

Smallest inner dia the Epson Print Cd software is 20 M/M.
Its not so much the printer more the media thats needed for "Full Face" printing. The media is becoming more widely avaiable now, just a question of how good they are in term of lifespan ?

  25. Don't know why you all don't use Neato DVD Labels and Nero Cover Designer......

I have somewhere around 800 DVD Movies and all of them have labels that I have printed and applied. You can't pull them off with a bulldozer.

Never had any trouble at all with them playing or coming off.

I also have a Epson Stylus R200 ordered which I will use to print direct to the disc which I think makes a prettier looking disc.]

You get software with the R200 that allowes you to either print close to the hole or the ring which ever the original label shows.

You can order white printable labels full face and ring type from meritline and or supermediastore.

This is only my personal opinion and like everything else everyone has one.

    I'm a little confused.

Are sharpies really a "no no"? Are you saying that all of the people that replied "sharpie" are merely doing so to give me bad advice? That Sharpies will ruin the DVD?

I would hope that a forum such as this wouldn't have people that would intentionally give misleading advice.

Oh-ohhh, gurus, the pressure's on. You inability or refusal to simply post an image a Sharpie-labeled DVD is apparently tarnishing your credibilty. Better do something -- FAST!
