Problems with my backups...............

Hey all have not been having luck recently backuping my DVD's. I am not sure what is going on, hopefully you folks can guide in the right direction. Here is what is happening. After I make the backup I am getting pauses, skips and stoppages in play while trying to watch the DVD. Here is the weird part I can take the DVD and place it in another player or my computer and it might not have a problem at all or it may have a problem in a different spot.

I have have been burning for awhile now have I use the following programs. DVD Decrypt, DVD Shrink and NERO 6 or Alcohol 120% to burn. I have updated DVD Shrink recently to 3.17 beta-could that be the problem. I also use DVD Decrypt 3.2.

Procedure I use is Rip with DVD Decrypt, Then use DVD Shrink make an ISO file then burn later with Nero or Alcohol.

Today I tried something different Used DVD Shrink to rip and encode then burned with NERO. Will let you know results.

BTW I have a NEC-2500 drive and use DVD-R&+R's same problem. Media is from Fry's or offline www.shop4tech.com think I had the Sonic or next step up DVD's. I also just reinstalled DVD Shrink 3.16 today

BTW your thoughts on Clone DVD is it worth it?

Sonic? I looked at the web page you provided, and I was like WOW, as low as .26 per DVD, OMG can they get any cheapier? Have you tried any other brand of DVD? something that might cost somewhere around $1.00 per disk to see if that makes a diffrence?

What is the media code on the Sonic disk?

I think one of my DVD Players may have been at fault( Black APEX). It's approx 2 yrs old and a couple of my other players are playing discs that it would'nt. We'll see...

Cheap media is the culprit and not the dvd player!!!!!

I've been having the same problems. Every time someone says something about freezing or skipping there is always someone else to jump in and blame the media. Well how about this?....... I have a 50-pack of TY that I got from Rima.com (reputable dealer?) that freeze and pixelate badly. The reason I bought the TY's is because the Legacy's (prodisc) that I bought from Newegg were doing the same thing. I finally figured out that is was DVDShrink that was causing my problems, even with a Deep Analysis. I switched to DVD2one and now my problem is 95% fixed (it still does it slightly). Oh and get this, the Prodisc's that I mentioned above, have far fewer problems that the TY's! I'm pretty new to this so maybe I'm doing something wrong, I don't know. Anyone care to comment?

How do you screw this up? You rip the DVD with DVD Decrypter (file mode), then you open DVDShrink, choose your main movie, audio and subs (re-author mode) then you back it up (check deep anylisis). I've buned with Nero and with CopytoDVD with the same results. Like I stated before, the only way around this problem (so far) has been to use DVD2one. Is it possible that surfing the net while DVDshrink is running is causing this? Is it possible that DVDShrink relys on some other application or encoder already installed on my machine that needs updating? I really wish I could use Shrink instead of DVD2one, I like it better. But evey time I use it I get crap results. Does anyone know where I can get an older version? Is it possible that Rima sold me fakes? I'm attaching a pic of the TYudens (YUDEN000T01). They have globs of plastic (or whatever they coat them with) around the edges. Is this normal? Seems to me that it would throw them out of balance.

Could it be bad media if there are no errors? The discs play fine on my cpu but screw up in my Apex AD-660 and JVC XV-NP10SL. Maybe I should switch to -r and see what happens?

On another forum, I was told it's ok to surf while you are burning, but I am to old fashion and im not touching my computer while it's burning. I have a 8meg buffer on my burner and I still dont do it, friend of mine uses it, and he surf while burning with no problem, im just not doing it.

It could be that your player does not like this media, or that your burner cannot produce quality burns on this media, or that individual burning softwares may have varied levels of success with this media. I know it sounds like everything links back to the media, but simply changing the media may or may not fix the problem.

I have seen a couple of cases where the exact same discs that were freezing on my mate's DVD Player play flawlessly on mine. He had just bought 100 discs at a great price, so instead of chucking them or selling them he simply bought a cheap n nasty DVD player that played them flawlessly also.

The point I'm trying to make is that changing the media will probably fix the problem, but there are situations when there are probably better (and cheaper in the long run) alternatives.

Is it possible that it's just a cheap burner (ARTEC 12X VOM-12E48X RTL)? I just tried some Maxell -R's (TYG01) and the problem is 100x worse. I've already spent more $ trying 3 different brands of media than what I paid for the drive. So I guess I'll just replace the drive. Maybe I can pawn this one off on my brother!

Although I should add that changing the burner won't mean a thing if your DVD Player still doesn't like the media you are using. I would try playing your burns in a couple of friends' DVD Players first before buying a new burner. If possible, then try the other way around and burn the same media on someone else's burner and see if it plays on your player.

Hello, Before you throw those discs away. Try using DVD Decrypter- Rip in file mode- shrink it to 4.7GB with DVD2ONE- then make a Image file with Image tools classic- finally burn to dvdr with Dvd decrypter. All these tools are in the tools section. Hope this helps.

I couldn't agree more as it's a combination of the few things mentioned that will determine the quality of the playback but most will simply say 'poor media'

even same model DVD players can be different as I have experienced. My DVD player was fussy with certain DVD's yet my mate's exact same model bought at the same time from the same shop played them back flawlessly!

I would always suggest you try other players first before pointing the finger at the media as it might be your player just wants everything perfect

p.s. another thing I have noticed when looking at other people's backups is that they don't even make sure the disc is spottlessly clean before burning. You can see where dust particles or whatever have been on the surface while they have burnt the DVD, along with the few grubby fingerprints on the edges. I laugh when they ask why they have playback issues sometimes and show me the discs with tiny missing burn patches everywhere

Well, let's just say that while the media is the first suspect, there are certainly more possibilities. It's easier, however, to go buy some new blanks than it is to go buy a new DVD player, no?
