  1. Greetings.

I hate to post this question, as I know it has probably been asked and answered a million times, however I can't seem to find it using the search features.

Any how, to get to the point... I had 4 "clips" in *.wmv format, using x-converter I joined them, which gave me a 788MB MPEG 1/2 file. Then using TMPGEnc, I managed to shrink it to about 400plus MB, I need to reduce this here, after all the original clips were 30Mb a peice.

How do I go about doing this?

  2. When encoding you would reduce the bitrate, but this will give you worse quality.

You seem to have a misunderstanding of video compression. wmv files use a higher video compression thus the file sizes are smaller. When converting to mpeg2 the video will be larger, because the mpeg2 compression is not as great as with wmv.
    Blah, blah, blah

  5. Well, the answer depends on what you want the final output to be, ie VCD, SVCD,CVD, DVD, DIVX/AVI, etc.

I believe to shrink the file even more, you should go the DIVX or XVID route. With divx/xvid, you could shrink the sizes smaller than what wmv offers. As the other poster mentioned, mpeg-1 or mpeg-2 can be controlled to a certain point with the lowering of bitrate. You could reencode again and if you can live with it, encode borders on the sides and top and bottom of the video and reduce the bit rate. This may help. without knowing specs of the video and what you intend on doing with it, I and others could go on forever talking about the possibilities.

There are 2 factors that determine the size of digital media like video and/or audio: Time and bit rate. The relation is very simple: Size=Bitrate x Time. Define 2 of these, and the third is easily calculated. It doesn't matter if it's mp3, wmv, DivX, mpeg1 - it's the same calculation.
