Since Saint Nicklaus was a Franciscan monk who had a vow of celibacy, there never was a Mrs. Claus.

Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

San Francisco is named after the monk who founded the Franciscan order -- Saint Francis of Assisi. You probably already knew that, and were making a joke, but one has to be careful here. I have seen movies mistaken as factual video, and mock up news articles mistaken as hard-nosed no-nonsense reporting.

And as for breaking vows of celibacy in the Catholic Church, although the media has eaten it up over the last few years when it does happpen, it really is a rare event. Few priests have broken their vows, but when the few who do break them, it makes the headlines because it sells papers, given the impression the Catholics are saturated with with fallen saints, although I believe nothing could be further from the truth.
    Hello.

The occupation does seem to attract a much higher than
community average of sexual deviants. I wonder if anyone
or any institution has collected stats on exactly the percentage
of pedophiles located inside and outside the catholic faith.

The claims of media bias could be true, but it is only a few
decades since such things were expressly hidden by society
and the media. Most reports of molestation were covered up
    in those days.

Maybe at the beginning of the twenty first century
we are not seeing not bias at all, rather the mere tip
    of a horrific iceberg.

My brother-in-law Ben was an ordained priest. He also has a Phd in theology and used to be a professor at Univ. of Albuquerque, a Catholic university that is gone now. Ben left the priesthood because he wanted a family.

After the college closed Ben spent all his time at a "remedial" catholic order here in NM whose sole purpose is counseling priests who have committed varying levels of offenses against the church, including molesting incidents. This order was the last stop before defrocking or excommunication.

According to Ben there was a steady flow of priests entering, staying 6 months or a year, and then resuming duties at their parishes. Some were repeat offenders.

I was a bit shocked when he told me the numbers of priests entering each month. He never told me exactly how many were pedophiles, and he shouldn't have, with the confidentiality and all. I had no idea the problem was as widespread as it is. I had always thought the problem was a small one and the media exaggerated the problem, like they do with most things.

Unless we have a number, we are pretty much where we started. A reaon for entering the remedial order could be pedophilia, of course, but also stealing, vanity, or maybe like your brother-in-law, just considering leaving the Church.

I should have been clearer. He was there as a counselor, not as a student/correctee. And you're right - without a breakdown of the actual numbers, many of those could be lapses in faith, impure thoughts, etc.
