Being THAT much overweight is a disease with physical
causes, just like cancer or any other disease. You
just don't know any better.
Here is a bit of history of interest:
People in tropical and semi tropical
environments were considered lazy for centuries. Many medical
and anthropological studies confirmed that people from certain
parts of Africa and South America, especially those who were
black skinned, were lazy and bone idle.
When presented with
a fair days labor, it was said, these people often complained and
made poor efforts. Psychologists and psychiatrists came up with
a title for this so-called malingerers syndrome. They called
it malaria - a Latin derived term for malingerer.

no, being that fat means you eat more than you burn off. you want to sit on your ass all day, fine, but if you eat more than one normal meal a day you will put on weight. if you eat more than that you obviously have no self control, it's not like people can convert the air into calories, in order to carry that much fat you MUST have put a lot of food in you. it has nothing to do with "glandular problems" or "slow metabolism" you just eat too damn much.
-
What I said. You just don't know.
You have no clue about the endocrine system, the
role of the hypothalamus, ATP bioautonomics, psychological, cultural
and other enviromental factors in obesity.
You have no idea that 300 genes (so far) have been linked with obesity.
You have never heard of insulin resistance syndrome, the
role of hormones (like ghrelin or leptin), peptides, and other
biochemicals such as cholecystokinin ? Homeostasis is a
poofter standing still in your book!
You even dismiss hypothyroidism, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and Cushings Disease as causes of obesity!!
Your argument is :
no, being that fat means you eat more than you burn off
weight is controlled by two things
1) how much you eat
2) how much you exercise.
At a bar or at a night out with friends, such views would be
the norm. But as part of a logical debate? I don't think so. -
ok, enlighten me. in order to gain (i'm going to visually guess) 140 pounds of fat, you need to put that much food in your body, right? where else can it come from?
-
LMAO
You can't eat 140 pounds in food to gain 140 pounds in
body fat.
Let's forget the mechanics of someone elses obesity. Lets look at
your psychological issues behind the obvious hatred and disgust
you feel for that female in the photo. -

Oh no.. I've discredited my entire argument:P
What about discussing the way you feel and why?
@ TommyKnocker
So you experienced trauma as a child or young adult
and may suffer latent gender issues. See a therapist. You will
never get the attention you so badly seem to crave here. -

Capmaster,
Let's look at the etymology behind malaria:
After 1620, Malaria was described in terms of its advancing symptoms.
Ague, "a febrile condition in which there are alternating periods of chills, fever, and
sweating", actually comes from Latin febris acuta "sharp fever" which found its way into
Middle English as fever agu. The Latin adjective acuta came to be used
on its own as a noun meaning "fever", and this became ague in medieval French and was
borrowed into English as ague. Ague was used to describe general sickliness for
The English as was Malingre for the French. Sýndrome Malingre was the French term
for the syndrome. Between 1717 and 1767 this was referred to as Malingre's disease
or Malingerer's disease. I even have a reference to malingerer's disease in a
1927 medical journal.
Mal, according to your quote, comes from the Latin malus meaning bad. But Malaria
was 1st quoted as a specific syndrome by Lancisi who stated he derived the term
from the French "Malingre" meaning sickly. Going directly to the root word in
this case is an etymological error.
There are many cases where the meanings of words change and are not
generally recorded for reasons of brevity or ignorance. Read The "Surgeon
of Crowthorn" on the development of the Oxford English Dictionary for
examples. So between 1620 and 1767 (1767 was when Lancisi's work was well known)
we have a disease referred to as malingers syndrome by the medical community.
Ok so lets do a dumb search on linger as we already have your quote
on "mal"
Main Entry: lin·ger
Pronunciation: 'li[ng]-g&r
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): lin·gered; lin·ger·ing /-g(&-)ri[ng]/
Etymology: Middle English (northern dialect) lengeren to dwell, frequentative of lengen to prolong, from Old English lengan; akin to Old English lang long
intransitive senses
1 : to be slow in parting or in quitting something : TARRY
2 a : to remain alive although gradually dying b : to remain existent although often waning in strength, importance, or influence <lingering doubts>
3 : to be slow to act : PROCRASTINATE
4 : to move slowly : SAUNTER
transitive senses
1 obsolete : DELAY
2 : to pass (as a period of time) slowly
- lin·ger·er /-g&r-&r/ noun
- lin·ger·ing·ly /-g(&-)ri[ng]-lE/ adverb
yet another etymological spanner in the works - just like your googled dictionary quote.
What I said about the Latin stands true. -
I feel so ashamed using dictionary.com now. Damn offline - you've done your research haven't you? I stand corrected

Offline has a lot of spare time on his hands. Damn you mechanical masturbation devices. Now man can even be lazy with sex. How slothfull we have become. If I had the energy to get out of my bed and turn off the computer voice dictator, I'd really type some nasty comments to you, but Simpson's are on and the pizza guy just arrived with my internet order. :P
EDIT - I'll probably just make the wife get it, the same way I made her order the pizza over the internet. -
I think since flan gave up the argument, offline turned his attention to the next poster. I'd better sneak out of here quick!
