  1. Could someone please tell me what a good program would be in order to convert an avi file to a dvd file and burn it onto a dvd-r disk?

I've already tried cucusoft and it won't let me do more than 1 minute. I've looked through all the guides and I either get lost or they won't work for me. I also tried Main concept to convert avi to mpeg. Then I guess I posted a question in the wronge forum (someone gave me a warning) . I asked for a good program that will convert mpeg to dvd (and burn) to make a dvd for about 23 minutes. Someone told me to use TMPGEnc dvd author. I ended up w/ a TMPGEnc file that wasn't even play-able on my dvd player. I'm also confused as to why they recommended that when TMPGEnc dvd author doesn't burn dvds. So now I'm not sure what to do with the TMPGEnc file or how to turn it into a dvd file.

All I need is either a program that can convert avi to dvd AND burn it or a program that can convert mpeg to dvd AND burn it.

I'm not sure if its important if I say what kind of dvd burner I have or anything like that. So just in case: hp dvd writer dvd420i. I'm guessing some programs are better with certain types of computers.. I have windows XP. and its pretty fast with most programs. The disks that I'm trying to burn the videos onto are dvd-r. I'm not sure if the file would need to be dvd-r in order to work on my dvd player (it plays dvd-r and dvd files)

I really need a program that would take less than 45-60 minutes to convert a 23 minute avi or mpeg file.

Hopefully I'm not asking for too much. I've tried my best to figure this out for myself many times so I'm hopeing that someone who has figured it out can help me.

-thanks for takeing your time and reading this/helping me with my problem.

  2. The person who suggested TMPGenc didn't give you a bad recommendation. However, the person didn't give you the whole story. Here're my steps for getting from AVI to DVD:

    1) convert AVI to MPEG2 using TMPGenc (not that this file alone won't play on a dvd player -- you first need to "author" the dvd)
    2) Author in DVD-Lab (basically, this steps adds the menus, structures the files, etc for a DVD player to recognize)
    3) Burn using Nero (however, you can also burn in DVD-Lab, although I've found that the burn isn't as good and my DVDs aren't compatible w/ all players)

So, bottom line is that to make a quality DVD that'll play in most players you need more than just TMPGenc. I'm sure there are all in one applications, maybe from ULead or Roxio -- but I've never used them.

  4. I did all of that but when I burned it from the TMPGEnc dvd author it was a TMPGEnc file which made it so that my dvd player couldn't read it. how do I fix that?

also: "NOTE!! be sure your clip is dvd mpg"

does that mean that instead of it being mpeg 2, make it dvd?

ZippyP (I wonder if we are related )

I followed your advice above to covert my .mpg video but when the time came for TMPGEnc.exe to do its thing, I got the following message on the screen:

"Read error occurred at address 00012F40 of module 'TMPGEnc.exe' with 20656850"

When I hit the enter button, the programme closed

What on earth am I doing wrong?

You may have used TMPGEnc to get a MPEG2 file, but chances are you didnt get the right ones. If you used TMPGEnc correctly you should have gotten a .m2v and an .mpa file. If you didn't you can do this buy selecting "Output video and audio as elementary streams" in the last stage of the project wizard. To me it sounds like you just burned an MPEG2 on a disk, that don't work. You have to author the .m2v and .mpa files so your DVD can read them, unless you have an MPEG DVD player. :P Chances are I'm wrong, I'm still a n00b.
