  1. Hello, everyone.
I'm having a huge difficult to burn a DVD+R media in my drive and make this work on my dvd standalone player. The truth is until now I can't do this... I'm very frustrated and even desperate...
I don't know where is the problem and I have burnt a dozen of medias trying to get success and the only thing I get was throw away them to the trash. I tryed different brands (seven of them) thinking the problem could be there but this didn't work.
I use a Sony DRU-120A and I only can use DVD+R and DVD+RW medias. My player is a Sony DVP-NS315 and the softwares I used to burn was Ulead MovieFactory 2.0, Easy CD-DVD Creator 6.0 and Nero 6. When I use a DVD+RW media everything goes right and I can watch my movies using my NS-315 player but this media is more expensive. When I burn a VCD disk the things go fine too. The only problem I have is when I try record my movies using a DVD+R media.
Well, can anyone give me a light about this?

Have you considered that perhaps your Sony player cannot play +R media?

If you burn a successful +RW burn in, say, Nero... and then turn right around and hit "burn again" and use a +R... and it DOESN'T work, then odds are either that your drive is completely FUBAR, or your player won't play +R's.

I don't think it's your DVD player. I have the same model and it plays all recordable media fine (DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW, CD-R/RW). In fact the instructions says that this DVD player should be able to play these types of media. What I find strange is that it plays re-writeable media OK because this type of media is usually harder to read. Have you tried testing the disc's using DVDinfo Pro or Nero DVD/CD speed. You stated that you tried different brands of media. What brands have you tried?

This is what happens, but I know it can read +R disks. One thing I forgot to say is that I can read the +R disk I just have recorded with my sony recorder. The problem is with the player. I don't know if this is about something during the recording process... but I don't know why I burn the DVD+RW and everything goes right and when I try the +R my and player says that the disk is dirty. This is the message I get: the disk is dirty, but it isn't...

    Hmm... weird.

    Ok try this...

Find a single-layer DVD. I'm sure you have one, most everyone does.

Fire up DVD Decrypter, do Mode->ISO READ, and then Mode->ISO WRITE. Burn to +R, and see if THAT plays.

If it does, then you know it's something with the tools you were using, maybe a wrong format (UDF versions, set as Data instead of Video, etc.) or something. But if it doesn't, then I'd definitely say that your player hates +R's, or at least +R's burnt by your burner.

P.S. Despite what Sony CLAIMS, in my experience their Quality Control on their lasers and lenses is piss poor. I've seen MANY a Sony that just hated certain types of media for no good reason, even though it was SUPPOSED to be able to read them.

Well... out of those, the Smac and SmartMedia are definitely garbage.

I think that's a little unfair - not only on Sony, but all hardware manufacturers. While I will give you a £30 player will play anything but a £300 Sony may not, some of the blame has to go with the media manufacturers. A burnt disc should appear to the player as a pressed disc, and if it does not, you can hardly blame the manufacturer of the standalone for that...

A DVD player should be able to play pressed discs - if it does that, it's in spec. If it says it will play recordables and does, on the whole, then you have to wonder what's up with the media that it won't play.

Ahh, but this fellow's unit does NOT, on the whole, play recordable media. It plays RW media, which sounds a lot like the older units... many of which would play RW's but not R's.

And my experience with Sony is based on having disassembled many of them. From PS2's to their standalone DVD players, Sony's DVD laser systems are garbage. The only ones I've seen that aren't terrible are the ultra-high-end ones... which have ALWAYS been able to play all media but also have cost $1000+.

  11. Your Sony DRU-120A is a OEM Ricoh5125 drive

888888 was on the right track but Sony's firmware does not support bitsetting.

You need to flash it to a true Ricoh so you can bitset.
    Here is the guide
    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=174580

Some of my links might be outdated, and the latest ricoh fw is 1.72 now.

After you flashed it I suggest you use the latest Nero Express to burn DVD-Videos and check the bitsetting option

I bet your compatibility problems will go away.

  12. Sony sucks in it's entirely entity.....

mostly, players can read a +R and have problems with +RW, because, R is more likely as a pressed disc.

anyway, looks like the only option here is to flash it with a Ricoh 5125A firmware, and do bitsetting

you can find Ricoh hacked firm, for RPC1 here.....http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=39

or, you just go on Ricoh web page and get on official one.

I use DVD bitsetter to play with bitsetting, others use dvdinfopro....

I just have done this and seems it was a success. But what happens now? I'll buy a new +R media and will try recording my movies again (with Nero, as you recommended...). But (sorry if this is a little stupid question...) this won't allow me to record -R medias too or will?

Finally WORKS!! You're very smart and this really solve the problem. First I flashed my Sony drive, then I bought the cheapest media (SmartBuy) and used the Nero 6 software to burn my +R media following what you wrote and voilá. I got it!
Thanks a lot by your very cool reply.
