  1. I have posted this before but I didn't quite get a good answer, so...

I am using version 5.7 of WinAVI and I'm encoding a 700MB AVI file into a DVD. The problem is that the DVD fileset ends up being 2.39MB, even when I select output fileset size to be 4.7GB in the Advanced settings (I leave the other settings on "Auto"). Why is the output fileset not 4.7GB? Does it matter? Will the quality be the same with a 2.39GB or a 4.7GB fileset?

And I do realize I will only get a file of relatively the same quality as the original AVI file. I just want to be able to play my AVI files on my DVD player.

    Thanks in advance,
    Jason.

  2. The quality should be the same. WINAVI did convert it to the best possible output and it ended up being less than 4.7 GB. hope that helps.

  3. By the way WinAVI is the best tool I have seen to transfer DV into dvd with virtually no quality loss. I have used many other programs but WinAVI does a straight conversion so there is no loss. When video is converted to MPEG and then authored you loss quality but WinAVI takes out the MPEG conversion process out and does a great job of it too.

I am surprised that WinAVI does not get more press on this site. I have been doing conversions to MPEG for years and when I started using MINI DV I just about killed myself trying to get a perfect copy DVD from it and WinAVI seems to be the only way to do it. No other conversion can give you the quality.

  4. The thing is that I keep getting these 2.39GB filesets on different movies. This seems weird to me, almost like its a bug.

    I don't know,
    J.

"Taking the mpeg conversion process out" is quite impossible if you are making a DVD from an avi. A DVD is an mpeg, no way around it, and it is in the VOB files that you burn to the DVD. There is always a loss in quality when you convert from avi to mpeg, but if you use a good encoder (TMPGEnc, CCE, Mainconcept etc.) and the proper settings then your output should be close to your source.

Sorry I can't help with winavi, I don't use it.

  6. I understand that DVD is MPEG and that is what WinAVI converts it too, but it looks much better than anything TMPEG has ever given me. I have been using TMPEG for about 4 years, but as far as converting my Mini DV video to DVD the quality has never been close to the original. If you have perfect settings for it I am all ears but I have never seen super high quality video come out of that program. I have been stuggling with this because Mini DV video is great but transfering it to DVD loses too much quality. This should not be considering how good the original source is.

I have done something similar but found audio conversion from the original 5 channel to 2 channels
I don't know if someone else experienced something similar
