  1. I'm not sure what part of the forum this problem should be posted, but here goes: I've recently put together a new pc and I'm not sure what codecs, files, etc I need to watch Xvid and Divx movies. Sometimes I start a video up and it'll "jerk" in playback, with spots and pixel garble showing up continously with no sound. Other ones I have it starts up and then shuts down. The files won't even play. These are movies I was able to watch on my older pc, but I have no idea what it was I had installed that allowed me to watch current conversions.

If someone could point me in the right direction in the forums that explains what to do or simply tell me where to download what it is I need so I can watch current Xvid and Divx types... with sound.

I thought I installed Xvid and Divx codecs, but that doesn't seem to help.

    Thankyou

Simple answer is to use AVIcodec or Gspot to see what codec the file needs, then download it. If you have a lot of codecs, like a codec pack, that can cause more problems than it cures. I just install codecs as needed because they are much harder to uninstall. For DIVX, I use 5.1.1.1031 and it plays all the DIVX I have.

  4. Might I suggest that you just install the latest ffDshow build. You can get Atho's latest build here. It will decode both Xvid and Divx (better than there default decoders in my opinion) and it has many filters/adjustments for you to get great quality playback. Normally it also takes less CPU to do it than Xvid or Divx's decoders as well.

  5. Ok... ffDshow is installed... and the video part is great, but no sound. I used avicodec and it gave me info on the audio part..but not sure what I need to download.

What info did it give? That should tell you (us) what codec you need. Quite possibly Ac3filter is needed.
