I thought I remembered reading about a program that would convert DV into mpeg2 as you were capturing it on your PC. I have a canopus advc-100 and I use windv to capture then go through tmpgenc to convert it into mpeg 2. Anyone know what I am talking about... thanks.

I don't know what you've read before, but it ain't gonna happen...
If you want to speed up your process, then you'll need to capture straight to MPEG...

    Good luck!!!

  3. Yup. You need a hardware MPEG2 encoder card/device or standalone DVD recorder with firewire input.

In fact, if you had either of these you wouldn't even need to bother using the Canopus DV converter... you would want to go straight from analog video to MPEG2. Less digital processing noise and artifacts that way.

  4. Mainconcept MPEG encoder will capture straight to MPEG. I think this is what you are looking for. It converts on the fly, but you won't have the original DV file. Either 1 or the other, not both.
Also think Ulead VideoStudio 6 can do this.

  5. Ulead Media Stuio Pro can convert to MPEG (via software) while capturing from a DV device.

  6. So can Pinnacle 8 and 9, but it is not really able to do it in real time (unless you have a very fast computer). There is an encoding lag. And the Pinnacle encoder quality isn't very good.

Mainconcept encoder can do it on the fly, sort of. You set up a buffer to keep up with the encoding and it may take a few extra minutes to catch up with a 2 hour video. If you have a really fast computer, you may not need the buffer, but I doubt most machines could keep up without dropping frames. It does work pretty well for most MPEG2 encodes, but if you want the best quality, on the fly is not the way.

UPDATE.... I installed mainconcept and did my first successful capture. The only problem I had was that the software didnt stop after the two hours that I had assigned it too. anyway, I captured around 10 hours of video without any dropped frames. No synch issues, just had to edit out what I didnt want with tmpgenc dvd author. This is a quick way to get around having to encode for 3-4 hours when making a DVD of a movie or something that you really dont care about what I guess you would call optimum results. I will still go the long route on football games and such.

MainConcepts is an excellent DV --> MPEG Encoder. I have been astonished by the quality

(Next is to copy VHS thru DV camera to MainConcepts via Fwire)
