  2. Commercial DVD's and VHS tapes are copy protected and your DVD recorder is honoring that. You can purchase devices that will defeat copy protection for the purpose you are describing. Sima "GoDVD" and several others will do this. However, why don't you simply rip the DVD with your computer and make a direct copy? It's much faster and the copy will be identical in quality to the original (unless it has to be overly compressed to fit on a single DVD-R).

DVDShrink is probably the easiest freeware that will do this for you (SmartRipper and DVD Decrypter will also rip DVD's). You can use Nero Express or another burning app to write to the DVD-R. A quad format DVD burner can be purchased for $80 (in case you don't have one).

Most likely the reason is because it's PROTECTED CONTENT!

A set top recorder WILL NOT make a copy of a CSS protected DVD, Macrocrap or not. He needs to use a computer DVD recorder.

I'm under the impression that analog output is unaffected by CSS digital schemes, and can only be affected by analog streams. In fact, I'm almost 100% certain of that.

I woulden't have posted if I had not tried it myself. How else would you record from a DVD player to a set top recorder, other than analogue?

Ah! You're meaning exact copy. I was talking about analog backup.

  9. I'm using a Gateway AR-230 version of the LiteOn, and I can verify that using firmware 1139, when copy protection is turned off, it will make copy of anything and everything you feed into it. This includes the latest copy protected DVD's and VHS tapes. I'm using the original built-in hack given in the DVD Hacks section of videohelp.com.
If he has a newer firmware that has disabled the hack, he will need to use the hack given by Lordsmurf. if he's lucky enough to have Liteon firmware 1141 or 1139, all he needs to do is go to the secret menu.

Can you confirm for me that 1141 uses CBR instead of CVBR ?

The hacked 1163 removes the MV only on playback.

It will not let me record protected video through its S-Video input.
I have to use the 1141 secret menu.

BTW how can I find out if it's CBR or CVBR?

  12. Does anyone know if using the hack for the gateway AR230 to make it all region and turn off macrovision will void the warranty? Are there any ways around this if it does?....like setting it back?
