Is this that fast at 480 Mbps?

I saw that as Bus transfer rate and thought I saw this bit: Sustained Transfer rate as 34 Mbps and firewire at 41 Mbps.

    Check out: http://www.maxtor.com/_files/maxtor/en_us/documentation/data_sheets/onetouch_data_sheet.pdf

I just found another mistake thinking that it is USB 2.0, it isn't as USB 1.1 at 12 Mbps as too slow.

I have use to another computer having that speed as USB 2.0 and this one got firewire as well. It is a notebook.

    OR

Get new USB 2.0 installed in that PC I wanted to have the Ext HDD connected. I'll have to decide soon.

She should be cheering you on. You are buying 160 gig for like 80 bucks after rebate. When you were a foolish spendthrift, like the rest of us, you were paying 400 for 2 gigs.

    Same for RAM.

    My main mach has 160, 120, 100, 80, 120 USB, 20 USB, 600 gigs.

    No. 2 440 gig,

No. 3, just 1 160, no externals, yet.

So, 1.2 TB, so far. Not for long, though.

    Cheers,

    George

If I were to average costs of how much I spent on my drives all together and including the cost to ship them, I think the cost would be around $.60-$.80 a gig. I usually get the drives, brand new, with a bunch of friends in a bulk shipment. the 200G and 250G drives were each about $90-$100 at the most. Seagate and Maxtor 7200RPM drives. I can't stand anything less than 7200RPM.

    My main machine has 1 X 80GB and 3 X 200GB (rotated through a removable HD tray).

My other machine just has the solitary 40GB drive.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    How'd you guess?

    Actually I don't even have a site.

Although every now and then when people ask me what I'm up to, the standard response is 'uploading porn to the internet.'

Ever thought of opening it up to FTP or something, or does the thought of hackers kinda quell that ?

Add another 4x80gig. I'm getting some Maxtor Drives from my brother. Not big ones, but free drive space (Well, I have to pay for the shipping, but that's less than $30)

    1 120GB Seagate
    1 40GB Western Digital

Also got a 40GB Maxtor in my Playstation 2...man do I ever feel inadequate as far as my PC specs go after reading this. I'm curious, how big of a PSU are you guys using with this many hard drives? I'm thinking about modding my XBox, throwing the 40GB WD in there and picking up a 2nd Seagate 120GB HDD for my PC...orrr, I will be buying 2 120GB HDD's, one for my XBox, and another for my PC, and then run the 40GB WD in an Enclosure via Firewire. Anyone have a similar setup?

I have 4 towers for my drives, but even then I have HDDs strewn in a closet like CD cases. They are all in anti-static bags, Of Course. All hell would break loose if I lost a 40gig drive with nothing but kazaa music downloads.

a good quality 600 watt is fine for a dual xeon with 10 drives and lots of cooling ... some video cards will need a bit more ---

its not hard also to use more than one power supply at a time -- simple mod to hook 2 atx together .. or use a older AT style for some drives ... make sure they all are on the same ground potential though .. and on the same phase on your mains ...

What size PSU do you have now? putting in a few extra drives shouldnt make a big difference you know if it doesnt power up if you need a bigger power supply. Most people have 300watt power supplies or higher and that should be just fine.

I want to switch my 40GB xbox HD to my ps2 and then buy a 200 GB drive and use in my ext HD casse (right now I have a 100GB drive in the case. that one that will go to my xbox)

I've done the same thing for a couple of towers in the past. It's not hard to do at all. However, if you have time and money you can make a BPU (Base Power Uint). My own design and name. I took a mini-tower frame and with some engineering help from my father, created a circuit board design (Mostly beacuse he has an old aquarium that he uses as an acid bath and has other good equipment) to make a power supply that had around a 4000W capability. It's basically a creation of 6 identical PSUs at 650W a piece. The unit gets pretty warm, but we added a liquid cooling system that attaches to the heatsinks and it has 4X5" fans to aid the cooling. I only put enough cables on it to support 4 ATX motherboards, 30+ drives and has the ability to add connectors to plug a server into. The thing is a heavy a** mofo and I should have made a wheel assembly for it. It takes 2 people to lift it and it still feels like it weighs a ton. It was also pretty expensive to make, so I don't suggest anyone else try it unless you feel like investing in a fun hobby. I think I can still dig up the design plans for it if anyone wants them, but it is NOT HARD AT ALL to figure out on your own. I think it would have been a lot cheaper just to buy 6 identical PSUs, opened them up and bought new styles of heatsinks and parts. I'm also heavy into making new and funky designs of computers for ergonmic reasons. I'll throw a list of design ideas and things in another thread.
