    Hi all,

I am thinking of getting an external hard drive, 120GB capacity drive. I noticed one advertised as having USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 support.

    No mention on firewire connection?

The brand is Maxtor and I don't know about the make?

Will the USB be slow in the data transfer rate? Will it be worse than the LAN speed of 100 Mbps.

Is it possible to have hardware problems or errors using the external drive?

The PC is on Win2000 and the USB as a 2.0 speed. It is P4, 2.0 Ghz CPU speed. Let me know of any suggestion?

    ChrisX,
I would guess that the external is bound to be slower, regardless of the specs on the interface. An exception to that might be a rip-roaring external SCSI drive, but they'll set you back some serious money for the interface and the drive

you have a number of options. you can find most hard drive manufacturers offering external drives in several capacities. they will all have usb2.0 and some will have firewire (for which you will pay more)

these ready made external's have a premium of about $100 or so from the cost of the bare drive. If you have ever swapped a drive you know enough to buy an external enclosure for about $30 and save $70 or more with ten minutes work.

In terms of speed, I dont have the stats, but they an be prettty fast and fast enough for most applications.

finally on errors, a couple of hints should eliminate them.
    1) don't dropp the enclosure too often
    2) seriously, DISABLE write cacheing if you plan to disconnect the drive on a regulatr basis. If you plan to keep it hooked up most of the time, the write cacheing will give you faster speeds, but will expose you to problems if you just disconnect the drive without using the "saftely reomove hardware" option on windows usb
    3) especially if you leave write caching, make sure to use the "safely remove hardware" and you should be fine.

Keep in mind large externals are very good for backups as you can keep it stored away from your machine. hard drive failures are one thing, but other data loss includes theft of your pc (expecially laptops), fire, or other catastrphic loss, an exteral backup stored away fromt he pc gives you much better protection.

there are also now networked usb ports that allow you to plug in usb components (especially drives and camera's) on your network independent of your pc,. those are nifty as well.

I actually hadn't counted up all my hard drive space in a while and I buy 200 or 250 GB drives every month or so.

    Workstation 1:
    74GB SATA boot
    200GB PATA storage
    147GB SCSI scratch
    PATA swap

    Workstation 2:
    74GB SCSI RAID boot
360GB SCSI RAID only 10k drives tho
    PATA swap

    Internet 1:
    120GB PATA boot
    80GB PATA scratch
    200GB PATA storage
    PATA swap

    Mobile 1: (not the oil)
    40GB PATA laptop drive

    PATA swap drives:
    5x 200GB
    3x 250GB
    1x 80GB
    2x 160GB

    FireWire storage:
    40GB bus-powered
    120GB
    160GB

    Totals:
    3110 GB PATA
    74 GB SATA
    581 GB SCSI
    3765 Total disk space

Huh, almost 4TB of storage at home. Wish more if it were SCSI but the secondhand drives are harder to come by these days. More home/power users must be getting into it. At work I think I only have 1TB total space, but I don't do video work there so it isn't much needed. The range of computer technology is astounding though. There is a working 486 within 15 feet of our new G5

    Hey! ASCI RED doesn't count!

I am running a meager 150GB on four separate drives. But, to compensate, I run four DVD burners, four CD burners, and enough blank rewritables to open my own online media store...I'd guess about 1TB.

Thanks for your advice and very much appreciated.

The biggest Ext HDD I can see is 300 GB and having firewire can be expensive as I found out on my enquiry.

I also found the data transfer speed can be fast however not as fast as the LAN.

My network speed is at 100 Mbps.

I've seen basic Ext HDD specs suggesting at around 35 Mbps to 40 Mbps. This is a little slow compared with the LAN speed. This is ok though.

I am worried on the safety of large amount of videos and music in the PC and as they are so large I can't backup in the DVD burner. I can break them into several DVD-R discs though.

I am still not sure whether to go ahead with the Ext HDD and I am more incline to have an internal drive instead as 160 GB Drive 'E'?

I can still buy the Ext HDD just to protect my data as you say for emergencies.

Anyway, the USB connection isn’t a problem at all as the PC got 4 ports available.

I have to make up my mind on this and will contact my PC specialist for another advice.

BTW, I still haven't got a DVD burner in the PC yet and a good time to consider options.

This PC currently got three removable storage drives and this includes a floppy disk drive.

I am getting rid of the old DVD-ROM due to region restrictions and music CD playing problems having copy protection on them. This is ridiculous.

    Anyway, thanks mate.

    Chris,

You are a little mistaken, there. Granted your networked at 100mbps, that's mega BITS per second, your USB2.0 is rated at 480 mbps, that's mega BITS per second, 4.8 times as fast as the network.

Your network thru put can be 12 1/2 mega BYTES per second, your UDSB 2.0 at 60 mega BYTES per second.

And your videos at 3.6 mega BYTES per second.

You have all the headroom in the world.

Buy what you can afford, can hook up. If you are comfortable inside the box, buy a 300 internal. If you are not, buy a 300 external.

    Simple.

    Cheers,

    George
