I have been successfully capturing and editing my videos using my Sony TRV 27 and Pinnacle Studio 8 and 9 for a couple of years now. Have never had a problem with my computer recognizing the camera or capturing from it. My last video project was completed the last week of June.

Now, for some reason, when I hook up my camera Windows XP recognizes it but I can't capture or send from the computer back to tape. Studio 9 says "Capture failed to initialize. I've also tried capturing with Ulead Movie Factory 3 and with Main Concept. They won't capture either.

Nothing has changed on my camera settings (I checked). The only thing that has changed on my computer is that I bought a Canon Digital Rebel and installed the accompanying software.

I've got a couple of things to try that I plan on doing today sometime:

    1) I will get my brother's Mini DV camera and his firewire cable and see if my computer will let me capture from it

    2) If it does, I will then take my camera over to his house and see if it works on his computer.

My question (for now) is this: are there any known conflicts between Canon drivers and software and Sony's driver's? I did run a search but can't come up with anything. Has anybody else had this problem?

    Thanks,

    Vanster

Well, it's not the camera or the firewire cable.

My brother's camera doesn't work on my computer either...and my camcorder DOES work on his. I must have a driver problem. I checked Sony's website and the only driver updates they have are for USB and not firewire.

    Any suggestions anyone?

  3. Try uninstalling that Canon Rebel software, and/or restore Windows XP to a previous point (when you were still able to capture with no problems)

  5. I get the same behavior with my Canon cam and Vegas. Rather than reboot, unplug, replug, etc. I've found that if I start Windows Movie Maker and pretend to start a capture (just play the video for a second or two) all is well. Close WMM, re-open vegas, back in business. Maybe the same thing would work for you?
I have nothing profound to say, so I'll just mention some things I really like (in no particular order): Tivos, Audis, Isuzu Troopers, Canon camcorders, Macs.

Thank you for the replies everyone. I did fix my problem finally.

I tried to uninstall the Canon software but it did no good. I downloaded drivers and spent several hours searching the web and Microsoft's knowledge base. Nothing worked. As far as my System Restore, it quit working a couple of months ago. Since my computer was running fine, I never bothered to try and find the solution to that problem.

I finally reinstalled Windows XP. If you have an original, complete installation disk (not an upgrade) it gives you two options: 1) repair an existing Windows installation or 2) Completely reinstall Windows. Since I did not want to lose any of my files or data, I went with option #1.

This worked quite well. It completely overwrote my existing Windows program without touching my programs or files. The only (minor) problem was that I lost two years worth of Windows updates which had to be downloaded again. Even with my broadband connection this took over an hour.

When it was all done, I can capture again. As an added bonus my System Restore now works again too.

Once again, thanks to those who tried to help!
