I have a friend who installed a fresh copy of XP but since he has dial-up it'll take forever for him to download all the critical updates and install them before using his comp without getting infected.

Since I have DSL I was wondering is there an all-in-one exe/patch so I can download put it on CD and just install it on his? The recommended updates would be nice too but for now I'm just looking for the critical.

    No

You must download the service pack, the update rollup, and all the updates since then.

It already has SP1... I just need everything from SP1 until now... What's this rollup you mentioned and where can I get it? Does it contain all the critical updates until now?

    No.

The update rollup 1 came out I think last year, or the first of this year.

All the other updates are separate.

    You must download them individually.

Get them from windows update or microsoft's download site.

  5. go to the windows update site and click on the update catalog (if you don't see it, click on personalize and chech the first one)
    Now click on OSs
Click on your flavor of OS
    Click on critical updates....
Click on add to the ones you want
    Click on your basket
Click on browse to select the location you want to save them to
    Click on download now

Burn to a CD or DVD and install on other computer

    OR
Order the security CD from MS and then just add the thing after that published date

  6. There is a magazine out of Great Brittan called "Windows XP' that always has a few free full programs, many shareware and demo programs and lots of game demos (usually on a DVD). It occasionally offers a 'roll up' of critical updates, upgrades to Media Player, and upgraded drivers for printers, video cards, etc. The price is 13.95 (CD version) and 15.95 (DVD version). It's worth a look every month as it sometimes offers older versions of good programs (with the opportunity to upgrade to the new for a discount price, there's always a catch). I always find it at Barnes & Noble and most computer stores that have a magazine section.
If it works, don't fix it.

what are people using at work to do these updates

do you have to visit each PC and run the updates manually

do you do them after work hours

when it tells you to reboot , do you really have to or can you continue with the other updates and then do one reboot later

You can go through the server to have the server dispatch these updates to the client workstations. You can set up an answer file, and some techs do this at night. Good time to do backups as well.
