I hope this is the right place for this, I wasn't sure. Say I have a 1.5G file and I use Goldwave to encode the audio to wav then TMPGenc Plus is used to encode both to mpg. After this, the mpg is burned to a dvd . This all takes up a lot of space on my disk and when it is all deleted, the space taken does not always return and, eventually, I run out of space. This has happened before and a pc shop found about 30G of deleted files. Unfortunately, someone else picked up the pc at the shop and I don't know how they were found to free up the space. Could someone tell me where I would find these deleted files on XP Pro? Thankyou

1) Empty the recycle bin
2) In explorer, right-click the hard disk and select "properties". Click the "Disc Cleanup" button. When it prompts you which files you want deleted, select anything that's "temporary", and also offline content.
3) Run the disc defragger that came with Win XP (Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools) -
Using Norton maybe? I seen some never Norton installations with an incredible stupid nazi recycle bin, something called Norton protected Files or something. Its probably made for people with kids using the same computer. If so, rightclick the recycle bin and select Empty (or was it Delete) Norton Protected Files.

check out Sequoiaview - it's a nice little freeware app that shows you, graphically, all the files on your disc.
when you hover over one of the blocks it shows, it will display the size, directory, and all sorts of other info. you'll instantly see any gigantic files hogging disk space.- housepig

Thanks for the replies. I do use Norton but the files are not in the Recycle Bin and I do defrag until it tells me the space is below 15%. I will definitely have a look at Sequoiaview and also check out Explorer. Thanks

I think what thor300 was saying was that even if you empty the recycle bin, Norton keeps the files in the Norton protected files. There was a post similar to yours not long ago.

Hi, thanks for the reply. The version of Norton I have doesn't use the Norton Protected Recycle Bin. It should; must be a very early 2003 version. Thanks again to all

I always find that C:\Documents and Settings\<your name>\Local Settings\Temp fills up with unwanted crap that "disk clean-up" ignores completely... (you will have enable "show hidden files" in the folder options to find this...

Thankyou mh2360. Previously deleted files were there. I have been looking for months for this answer. Thanks to all that responded.

Hi. I have somewhat the same problem only, it's not really a problem but a curiosity of mines. I usually delete large VOB folders left after the burning process to DVD-R. Sometimes, I find that I need to check something from the VOB that I deleted. I did not empty my recycle bin so I go there but I can't find the folder. It has happened several times to both large and small files. Just wondering where it went and if possible, how to recover them.
