I finaly figured out WHY I was having so much trouble producing my DVD vids of late.. hit and miss..

I finaly figured out how to use TMPGDVDAuthoring trial version and wow.. I am indeed impressed!! whooooo!

    It was the bleeping media!!

I had previously used Maxell products but recently used Memorex -R and +R. My principle video suite machine has the Pioneer A5 -R burner but my work machine has the MSI -+R 8X burner in it..

When authoring on the pioneer machine, I would use a -RW disk and play it on my set top (old Sanyo) and it would play nice but if I burned a -R memorex, I'd get a non playing DVD disk on the set top but it woudl work on the PC's DVD drive ok..

If I made an image on the MSI machine and burned a +R DVD it woudl work on the setop and pc, but not -R memorex.. -R Maxells yes..

Now that I know this, never more Memorex for me.. Maxells ok.

But what is it about the media that causes this.. why would one work but not the other?

    very strange..

Thanks to those who came forth to assist on the earlier thread.

    Cheers

It's to do with how reflective the disc is. they're impressive things these writable discs, fragile enough a laser can permenantly affect them, robust enough a laser can read them for years.

The dye used is very important, and is the first thing i look at when buying discs. if any organic chemists want to jump in i'm sure they can add some info

You see it a lot in posts on this forum. People have problems with their DVDs which they have burned. It plays OK on one player but not on another, and because it plays OK on one player it just *CAN'T* be the media. But more often than not (a non-scientific >50% but <100% of posts), that is exactly what it turns out to be.
You are wise to stick with Maxell.
