Someone just recently gave me a movie in .mkv format, and I researched online about it, and downloaded a plugin to watch. I wanted to convert it to .mpg or VCD but I used a tutorial where it said to decompress the audio from the .mkv file using avi2vcd, thus, giving me with 2 separate audio and video files. But this method will not work for me, because the program freezes, and stays at 0%, so is there any other possible way to convert this .mkv file to mpg?

  2. Haven't been here for a while, but according to what I know, OGM and MKV's have somewhat similar qualities, and an excellent tool I would recommend for "extracting" audio and subtitles would be VirtualDubMOD.

Check it out and see how it works for you.
Check out my guide on converting .OGM format to an SVCD with Selectable Subtitles and Multiple Audio tracks.

I have tried using VDUB Mod, but it only gives me errors, saying that it has some sort of unknown stream, and can only be "direct stream copied", so I am not sure how to use VDUB mod for converting to VCD, is there any other way? Or is using VDUB Mod the best ?

  5. Believe it or not, if you install Matroska Pack, then TMPGEnc will open a Matroska (*.mkv) file by choosing "Open / All files".

Well I ended up solving my problem by getting mkvtoolnix-0.9.2 which allowed me to extract what I needed from the commandline......

I forget where I downloaded it from but a search should find it fairly quick...
