Can virtualdub be made to capture from a DV source such as ADVC100?

Also I have noticed some post from people using virtualdub to process DV avi files. Virtualdub refuses to open my DV avi files(couldnt locate decompressor for format 'dvsd'(unknown)) how are these other people doing it?

    Thank you in advance.

You need to install a DV codec (get the panasonic codec from the tools section) and even then you'll only be able to effectively edit Type 2 DV with virtualdub as it can't extract the audio from Type 1 DV. You might be able to capture video but again not audio and when I tried it dropped a ton of frames. Use Scenalyzer or WinDV instead for capture.

  3. You can also use DV Type 1 to DV Type 2 Converter . I hope I spelled that right so that you get a link.

(Maybe its Type1 DV to Type 2 DV Convertor )

Try capturing directly to DV Type 2 using DVIO. Then install Panasonic DV codec and Edit your video with Virtualdub.

Vdub will not CAPTURE from a firewire. It will read DV Files though.

Remember, part of the problem is that VDub only works via VFW, not DirectShow. IIRC, the standard MS DV codec is DShow only. That's one of the reasons it can't open up. If you install the Panasonic codec (or others that can do VFW) you will need to make sure the registry points to using the standard dvsd fourCC with it and not Microsoft's.
BTW, I get around this by using a Canopus board (Storm2), which has its own fourCC and is VFW compatible.
'Course, that still doesn't fix the firewire capture problem, but you can always use DVIO or similar.

    p.s.
Gee, I really wish VDub could be made to work with DShow also, but I would bet money that the hooks for that are more involved (and more $$$).

I know I for one would pay money for VDub if it could capture in firewire.
    Hello.

OK, thanks guys, i'll give the panasonic codec a try. I am not too sure why one would use a panasonic codec though.. I have previously downloaded the Canopus Codec but it didnt help.

I tried the Canopus codec first, it didnt work. When I installed the Panasonic codec, it worked fine. Hopefully it will be the same with you.

    I found codecs very confusing.

Thank you to everyone for their input. This site is frellin awesome!

The panasonic codec works a treat. I can only assume that the Canopus codec is DirectShow only.

  11. You have to change the fourCC of your DV avi file to use the canapus codec. It is different than Panasonics.

Think there is a program called fourCC changer that does this for you.

EDIT - Here is the program - AVI FourCC Code Changer

Use Your DV Camera as a Netcam[/url]
]OrangeMicro has the solution to NetMeeting's lack of digital video support.

One solution we found is to buy a copy of OrangeMicro WebCamDV. Install and launch it. Then, open Options, click on the Video tab, and select WebCamDV as the video-capture device you want to use. Just like magic, you'll see the image from the camera connected to your FireWire port.

It works like the proverbial charm. You might not see any better netcam image quality. Your transmission quality has a lot to do with your system's power, but having a better source of video can't hurt if your computer has the processor juice to handle compressing the stream. Just make sure your camcorder doesn't turn itself off every few minutes like mine does.

Windows NetMeeting was built around VfW (Video for Windows), the original support for video that was kludged onto Windows back in the day. A long time ago. In fact, Microsoft began transitioning away from VfW a few years ago. Microsoft decided to provide DV for DirectShow only and said it will not provide support for encoding or decoding DV video data for VfW.
