I have put many home videos on DVD using a Panasonic DVD recorder. Now that I have a new PC with a DVD recorder I wanted to edit a few. Here is my problem..
I put my DVD in, it list the files as follows:
    VTS_01_1.VOB
    VTS_01_2.VOB
    VTS_01_3.VOB
    VTS_01_4.VOB
When I click properties on the first file it shows it is a mpeg2 file already and plays in my Video Explosion software.
The other 3 files show as unknown files when I click properties.
That part is weird in itself.
Anyway, I need to convert these files to mpeg2 so I can edit them. Over the past few days I have search the internet and downloaded various programs that supposedly can do this but none have instructions on how to.
Can someone give me a step by step instuctions?
I know its a lot to ask for the first post here but my search led me to this forum.
    Thanks.

I guess its just not meant for me to convert thses files. I downloaded yet another program (TMPGEnc DVD Author) and it gives me a error when I attempt to get the license. GRRRRRRRRR
I have actually downloaded 8 programs and have yet to convert a .vob file, just can't imagine it being this hard.
I have worked on this for 3 days with no luck.
Is converting a .VOB file like some kind of hack? Why is it so hard?
I could rant some more but need to get away from the PC for awhile.

3.2 GHZ Pentium w/HT Technology with 1MB Cache
    1024MB DDR SDRAM at 400MHz
128MB DDR ATI RADEON 9800 PRO Graphics Card with TV-Out and DVI
160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)

  4. Try to look for VOBedit in the tool section or try the link below. When open the VTS_01_1.vob then click Demux. I usually use AC3 for sound and all Video streams for video then use Impression Pro to make DVD. Try it for yourself and pick whatever you want.

  5. First of all, VOB's are already MPEG2 files. They have an extension (.VOB instead of .MPG) specifically used for DVD-Video is all. If you save (rip) the VOB's to your hard drive, you can even rename them with the .MPG extension and they will play just fine.

A very easy way I have found to save VOB's to a new MPG file on your hard drive is to use Simple File Joiner (available for free at http://www.peretek.com/sfj.php) - you simply specify the VOB's you want to join right off the disc and save to a new single .MPG file.

The .MPG can most easily be authored with TMPGEnc DVD Author, which can also do simple I and P frame editing. For frame accurate editing, you will need Womble MPEG-VCR or MPEG Video Wizard.

Freeware that can do simple I and P frame editing and chapter point selection is MPEG2Schnitt. From there, a simple no-menu DVD can be authored with IFOEdit for free.
