  1. I have some hi8 home movies which I would like to start archiving on DVD. Using my new miniDV camcorder, I have managed to transfer the hi8 to avi via the analog-passthrough to firewire, and the results are great. However, the audio in the avi sounds rather "tinny", and I think this is because it is captured in 48khz when the source audio is 44khz. Scenalyser allows you to capture in 44khz, so should I be capturing the audio in 44khz and then upsampling (in Cool Edit Pro or something) to 48khz? Or should it not matter that I am initially capturing in 48khz?

  2. Try running the audio outs of your Hi8 camcorder through an equalizer and then to the DV camera. You can adjust the tone any way you like prior to DV/AVI conversion that way. Helps with reducing wind noise and other problems, too. If you don't have one, check some local pawn shops or eBay. They are really inexpensive these days. Get a 9 band stereo EQ at the least, decent name brand. Don't overdo the adjustments, though. Takes a little practice.

You could also demux the WAV audio file from the AVI and alter the tone in a software WAV editor. These usually have a host of sound shaping features.
