  1. I have JVC HR-S8960E VCR with "built in" TBC which works great on almost all problematic tapes - but, I stubled to one which is perfectly fine on TV but when capture, picture shimmering and "jumping" up-down frequently... I know that TBC can't solve everything but some of tapes that really look bad with the same "jumping" on TV, with TBC looks great on TV and on PC while that one looks fine only on TV...

Any ideas why picture is "fixed" on TV and captured video looks like there is no TBC and what to do to solve this (if it is possible) ?

  2. A lot of people into VHS to DVD have more than one VCR. As said, sometimes the VCR just can't do the job. Maybe there are some settings in the VCR you can change though. You can check out Lordsmurf's site. He has a bunch of JVC VCRs..

  3. I'v seen Lordsmurf's site... my problem is that VCR produces fine result on TV while capture is crap - and TBC (which is part of VCR) is turned on and should correct this up-down picture "shimmering"...

Maybe you need a new VCR.

  5. not sure if your vcr has this, but does it also have an option called "video stabilizer"? Mine has this and when it's turned on (to help stop any jumpiness) it wrecks havoc with my capture card, similar to your problem, so if yours does have this, turn it off and see if that helps--

It has Video Stabilizer option but it can't be active together with TBC. I didn't checked it on that tape but on another one (during testing) it produced more droped frames than TBC so I stucked to TBC and never used video stabilizer.
But, I'll try it with this tape now when you sugested it.

And little offtopic - I see that there are tons of posts on Usenet about heavy problems with JVC VCRs (tape chewing and other kind of physical damaging like bending bottom of tape etc. , dropouts, static noise etc.) which pretty worries me (although they relate to mostly USA 4xxx, 7xxx, 6xxx and 9xxx models while my PAL model was not mentioned)... I have my VCR for a few weeks and played 3-4 tapes without any problems...

Does anybody have bad or good experience with these VCRs?

Any VCR will chew a tape if it gets too hot or the heads are not aligned. The JVC can go out of aligment, as can any VCR. My 9800 did that ones 2-3 years ago. And my 3800's did it a few times too.

My problem was abuse. 20+ hours of non-stop use is not good.
