  1. I just burned my first VCD and audio CD yesterday, and although both work on certain systems, neither work on DVD players. The audio CD was an Imation disc and plays on all my stereos and computer but NOT on either of my DVD players (Toshiba SD1200 and Samsung DVD-709 (I believe CD-Rs are supposed to work only on the 709)). When I put it in either DVD player, it says "Please Check Disc."

The VCD I burned also works only on computers and my stereo. It worked both on mine and a friend's computer, and my stereo read it fine (it had the correct amount of chapters and time by tracks). However, it would not be read by either of my players nor my friend's GE player (which does play VCDs). What would be the reasoning behind this? The VCD is a TDK CD-R, and gives the message "NO DISC" on every player. I figured the deep blue color of the bottom might be unreadable to these machines, but I fear if I write to an Imation disc, it will be a waste considering both DVD players output the message "Please Check Disc" with the audio CD.

A special brand of CD-R to purchase or what? What should I do?? All help is greatly appreciated.

  2. Okay, after just looking up all 3 players, looks like all of them are listed as NOT playing CD-Rs. I guess that would probably be the problem... ? Any advice for remedies besides buying a new player?

  3. If your players are not compatible with cd-r's you might get lucky with cd-rw's playing on your standalones. Sony cd-rs have worked for me on old pc cd-roms where other media has not, you just have to experiment, some might work.

As Shifthrow has said, you often find that CD-RWs will work , however they are also more expensive so hardly an ideal solution.

On my Sony (which also stubbornly refused all CD-R brands until this very week) I discovered that "Vivastar" brand CD-Rs work 100% of the time. These have a new dye whose name I can't remember, but whatever it is it works well.

I wish someone else would give these a go, as I'd be interested in knowing whether Vivastar is a cure for Sony's only, or if it works for all DVD players that don't have that second laser usually needed for general CD-R support.

  5. Yeah I know it's a hassle trying to find CD-Rs that play on DVD players that doesn't support CD-Rs. I had a Sony 360 for the longest time.

Here's my advice if you are going to be making alot of VCDS or SVCDs....buy a Pioneer DVD player next time...it rules!

Honestly I never looked back, never worry about the brand of CDRs anymore, it plays everything I throw at it....I'm very happy with my Pioneer.

    No...I don't work for them...LOL

  7. STI is cheap and best. I bought 600 CDs for just $30 after mail in rebate from circuit city. I am looking for another chance.
