If that's the case, then my M10S will play everything except +RW.

Now, this has me wondering if there is some recorder out there that will play everything (-R/RW, +R/RW, and RAM).

The best DVD Recorder not only records discs but also plays the most multi formats discs (may even ignore the Macrovision). If the DVD Recorder can only record and play few formats , it is NOT the best. Someone may just have such a unit. So, s/he may not understand the question. Have you seen such a best DVD recorder?

Lordsmurf, if you don't mind me asking, what happened to your APEX recorder? Are the units you have now any better?

There is no best. There are few multi recorders. Id probably vote for the Plextor multi drive 8x which is $162 at amazon.com.

I think I saw this on another forum where it was $119 AR today.

Lordsmurf, if you don't mind me asking, what happened to your APEX recorder? Are the units you have now any better?

After I saw my friend's units blow up, as well as mine having some oddities with refusing to power off, I got scared. I sold them off for a decent price, turned tail and ran away. I really miss the high quality AND DVD+RW together, but nothing I can do on that. The JVC has the quality, the Liteon has the +RW. I use my stuff WAY to much to deal with goofiness. If I'd have been a casual user, I'd probably never noticed. But not worth the risk. They only existed for 6 months or so. Walmart quick stocking Apex because of the returns.

He replaced with Sanyo machines (which are nice), and I opted for LiteOn 5001 and JVC DRM10S. I honestly wanted the JVC from the start, but I got sick of waiting, hence the Apex from Walmart.

They were nice units. The Digitrex versions in PAL don't have the same trouble it seems.

But we're talking about recorders here, not writers. Re the latter, I'd have to cast my vote for the Pioneer 107D (A07XL)........very reliable and whisper quiet writer that burns everything except RAM. It will, however, read RAM.

Thanks for an honest take on the issue Lordsmurf. Seems like JVC has lots of supporters. My over 2 year old xvs 60 DVD player from JVC is still going strong (especially in picture quality). Just hesitating between HDTV PVR or DVD recorder (for convenience vs. regular DVD writer). I guess it will take me few months to make up my mind (winter is the TV/video season for me, barely having time for anything now).

I don't have such great experience with JVC players. I had the XV-S300 and I could not play PAL DVD (only PAL VCD). It also had problems playing back some slideshows. Then I bought the XV-N40 which worked great at start but after 6months I get a framerate drop playing back home DVD's. As soon as I hit forward/backward the framerate is normal again. Anyone else experience this? I hope the DVD recorder doesn't have these issues.

I have a Panasonic e30, it plays dvdram, single disks or in carts.

Easier to get a source stream that is macro free in the first place.

That's what JVC answered. But sending it in will be more expensive I think. I only paid $50 after rebate.

On the subject of players;

I owned several brands of DVD-Players like the infamous Apex AD-600A, Sampo, Cyberhome, Mintek, etc and for those that think that a BIG brand name and price tag like Sony are the best players you're in for a big surprise, those cheap Asian made player like the Mintek would play almost anything you throw at them except Divx or course.

There's only one brand name player that I own and can play a lot of my "experimental" recordings like out of specs XVCD/XSVCD also plays PAL and most media format:
- The JVC XV-FA900 7-Disc changer, this is a wonderful machine, when I installed to my 55" HDTV for the 1st time I immediately noticed the difference, the progressive scan really works on this baby unlike other players that claim to be PS.
