I've just noticed that when I play movies that were done in the "re-author mode", on my home standalone, that the subtitles are always defaulted "on", usually to whatever the first sub-title language is. Yes it is not a problem to turn them off, but when I have a movie with foreign language in it, like Once Upon A Time In Mexico, it seems there is no way to show the subtitles ONLY during the foreign language parts. Ie, I can only view the subtitles, in all the languages available, but for the entire movie. So at the moment, EVERYTIME they start speaking the foreign language, I have to quickly turn it on, and then off again as it annoys the hell out of me if I had to watch the entire movie with English subtitles.

Is this normal, or maybe just my home standalone (Philips DVP642)? I always try to make copies without reauthor, even if i put the extras at 50-60% or so, for conveniance and to avoid this problem. Other versions have this problem as well?

Do what i did with Once Upon a Time in Mexico....
Used NERO RECODE and did a FULL DISC BACKUP but........
replaced ALL extras with a blank color (black) it shrinks most extras down
    to a couple of MB.
Movie plays fine with the Subtitles in the "right" place in the movie

  3. Right click on the movie component in Shrink and one of the options is to change the default subtitle.

A little bit of trial and error will probably be suffice if you can't work out which is which, but if there are 2 subtitles in English, the smallest one will probably be the one you want by default if there are subtitles for parts of the movie, eg location prompts or foreign language parts.

  5. Hi all.

A little bit of trial and error will probably be suffice...
To skip the trial and error step(s), play the original movie with your software player.
In WinDVD, for example, all you have to do is check the "Subtitles" menu to see which one is played by default (the stream numbering, whether audio or subpictures, are the same in DVD Shrink).
There are probably other ways of getting this information using IfoEdit and the like.

Well some testing on my own makes me believe this problem is only relevant to the Philips DVP642 player.

After trying what garryheather said, I tried both ways and the sam problems occurred. I just cant get the "foreign" English subs ONLY, wich is kind of a drag.

Funny enough, when I did put the DVDShrink'd Re-Author'd backup into my laptop with PowerDVD, worked like a charm. So this leads me to believe its the Philips. I tried setting all different menu options, but to no avail.

I put these comments in incase anyone has this player and has similiar problems.
