    Hi!
i hope this is the right place to post this...
i'm looking into buying a dvd-rom drive for my computer for making backups and viewing movies... is the lite-on signifcantly better then other drives? is there any difference between him and your common LG/BenQ/Sony etc. ?
i'm just seeing that the lite-on burner is popular but i don't know anything about the reader....

    Thanks,
    Tzvika

  2. NOTHING is better than a Lite-on 16X reader, except maybe a Lite-On 16x/52x CDR combo but thats not what you asked. Yes, Lite-On is the only thing you'll ever want for reading only. Burners are different, theres a few that are good including but not limited to Lite-On.

I own 3 Lite On DVD-ROMs and a Lite On CDRW drive. There is better. The biggest compliant I have with Lite On drives are their cheap construction, the trays are flimsy, and they make a bit of spin up noise.

The ECC and CRC on the 166 DVD-ROMs are not as good as older units (165 for example).

Unless your cheap, get a Toshiba drive with the speed hack.

I REALLY like the LG drives because they read anything (RAM too!) and then the BTC drive (strong lasers, reads even most stubborn discs).

I like the Pioneer, Sony and LiteOn too, but they cannot compete with LG and BTC in my experience. I'm about to replace another ROM soon, and another LG will be the one I get for this.

  6. I have a Sony DDU-1611 (16x Liteon Rebadge) and love it. I've had that baby peak as high as 15.2x when ripping movies w/ DVDDecrypter. Also plays most anything I put into it. In fact, I went and bought two more of them off eBay just recently to mount in Apex set-top decks.
