  1. ive got some files i need to convert, they are divx codecs.
i turned them to dvd mpeg2 pal using no1 video converter, but the file went from 350mbs to 2gigs as a mpeg2, not to mention it took 3hrs to do.
what i need is. what can i convert them to thats smaller, but will run on a stand alone dvd player.
i only have a cheap dvd player, which doesnt support divx, nor does my dads.

  2. Try the guides section:

    I'd suggest this guide:

    http://www.lancey.info/tutorial/divx2dvd.html

As far as the MPEG-2 files being large goes, they are meant to be. MPEG-2 is nowhere near as efficient as MPEG-4 at compressing video, so the files will be larger as a result. Two hours to a DVD (4GB or so) is acceptable.

With regards to the conversion time, it takes me twelve hours or so to convert a couple of hours of video to DVD since I use very high quality settings. Video conversion takes a long time, and this is unavoidable.

    Hope this helps,

  5. For the fastest way to do it, I'd use a program from the link that Baldrick gave. I personally use the Nero Express 2, since I already have it. Gives acceptable quality in a reasonable amount of time.

  6. murderous,

Over on your left-hand side, you will find a wealth of information. Have a read, and a lot of your questions will be answered.

MPEG-2 is the same for anything - be it files, SVCD, XSVCD or DVD. However, things like resolutions and framerates are different due to the standard each format must abide by. MPEG-2 is simply the compression used. MPEG-1 is VCD, and MPEG-4 is found in AVI files etc.

TMPGEnc is fine for converting to DVD-compliant MPEG files, and does take longer than a lot of other packages but yields very high quality. As nufan292 has suggested, Nero can also do this but I have personally not tried it and so I cannot recommend it.

Please do some research and you will gain a lot of valuable knowledge, and you won't have to keep asking these questions on the forums.

    Best of luck,

    Cobra

  8. one other thing.
the divx fiel goes for 42mins, but the mpeg only goes for 14mins and the just stops.

  9. Open your original AVI file in VirtualDub and select "Scan for bad frames". I suspect that a bad frame might be stopping TMPGEnc dead.
