  4. Fujifilm DVD-R made in Japan is Taiyo Yuden.

Other companies that maufacture in Japan are TDK (TDKG020000, TDK 001, TT codes, TTH01), Pioneer (PVC codes, now discontinued), Unitech Japan, and Mitsubishi (very rare, MCC codes, I have some!).

the problem begins when yuo find something that is not always made in japan (such as the Samsung TY's recentley found) that way you get the high quality cheaper - although risking to get something that isn't made in Japan - if you're looking for the sure thing - maxell & TY are always a safe bet as some of the brands mentioned by the other users here can also be made in taiwan or other (inferior?) media.

  8. Just curious...Is the spindle Maxell (@ newegg for example) as good as the retail (e.g. WalMart) ones? They're supposedly 100% same right?

Well, they sure as heck LOOK different:

Also, Newegg has the model number listed as 635127 while the 'retail 50-pack' is listed as 635053.

Could be because one is silver printable, and the other is yellow top branded

The 4x made in Taiwan are Prodisc, the 1x are Ritek. Look at the media reports section.

I'm just back from Office Depot with 4 25pks. All 4 are -R and say Made in Japan. I am about to check the media codes.

The +R's said Made in Taiwan so I did not get any of those.

    Edited to add:

    Spindle 1, Disc 1 = TYG01

The J&R WEBSITE has 50 packs of Maxell 4x DVD-R discs that look like the retail versions so I would assume they are the same kind i.e., yellow top MADE IN JAPAN type but I haven't actually bought any of these yet from J&R just going by the picture they use on the website.

The price seems right ... 50 pack for $49.88 and ground shipping is only $4.95

RIMA.COM has Taiyo Yuden 4x DVD-R discs for $100 per 100 pack or $55.00 per 50 pack but shipping brings that up a bit more than say the J&R shipping price.

    P.S.
Here is a picture of the Maxell 50 pack from the J&R WEBSITE

    I picked up a couple of 25-packs. Tough to beat 50 Maxell's for $39.97!

Media ID on both packs is the same; TYG01.

Well, with the 2 25-packs I bought today and the deal mentioned in another thread, I'm going to wind up with 100 Maxell DVD-R blanks, 50 CD-Rs, and a 3-piece set of luggage for a grand total of about 65 bucks!
