  1. Just started doing some recording on this for the first time.

Don't want to open it up if I don't have to....but let me ask, what is the deal with the cooling fan on the rear?

Is there one actually in there?.....if so, do you "feel" any air flow at all with it? (I don't).....may be a problem....the unit is recording alright but definetly on the hot side.....even the discs are coming out very warm to touch.

    Is this typical?

    Thanks

  2. No they shouldnt be hot. Keep the back a few inches away from anything & don't put it in an entertainment case or on the carpet. I do have mine in a case but I took the door off the front.

  3. I just read where this fan only comes on at a certain trip point?

    It doesn't operate continuously?

Could someone please verify this......I hate to open it up so soon out of the box.

    Thanks

    I have a Pannasonic E50 and I record 1 hour everyday.
When I finish recording I always remove the disc and it is always hot. Noticing this, I started cheking the top of the recorder's case. It is always pretty hot after 30 minutes operating. My recorder is set on a open metal rack. It has lots of air space under, over, some on it's right side and plenty on it's left side, and 6 inches of free space behind it. After that there is the wall of my bedroom. Right now it is Winter in Brazil and although Rio de Janeiro is a very hot city, temperatures are around 65-70F right now. Although I keep my room at slighty higher temperature for confort sake, the recorder is very ventilated.

Do you think I should worry about this heat issue ? The recordings all come out perfect, and I notice the heat cools off in less than 10 minutes after I shut the recorder off.

Do you think I will need to use the air conditioner when operating the E50 in the Summer ? Temperatures in Rio range between 90-105F !

    Ana,

I wouldn't worry too much about the heat with the setup you have, which is nearly ideal. It's normal for the disc to come out warm to the touch.

Same with summertime temps there - if it isn't giving errors, then don't worry about it. Remember that electronics run warm and it's perfectly normal.

  7. There is a LSI chip in there right to left of the transport that gets extremely hot....no where near the fan either.

I'm going to put a heatsink on it.....and try to get this fan to operate continuously.

That chip feels like the sun.
