  1. What a wonderfull source of information this site is. Thank you to everyone that contributes.

I have an avi file with the following settings (as reported by gspot):

    Bitrate: 72kb/s
    FPS: 200.0
    Qf: 0.001 bits/pixel
    x:y: 884X461 (1.92:1) [~23:12]

    Codec
    4CC: MP42/
    Name: S-Mpeg 4 version 2

I would like to convert this avi file to mpeg so that I can include it in a movie that I am producing on DVD. When I convert the file to mpeg, it looks somewhat distorted. From what I have read on this site, that may be due to the aspect ratio. How do I convert this file without the distortion? The avi file is created from a tool that "records" a software application. Do I need to create the recording in a different size? If so, what size? What is the proper format I should convert the avi to so that I can include it on a dvd movie? I'm using the TMPGEnc.exe tool to convert it. Thank you in advance for any and all help.

to convert using TMPGEnc use the following settings for a DVD mpeg2

    Video tab
    Aspect 16:9

    Advanced tab set-
    Source aspect should be 1:1
under clip frame - Arange setting - full screen keep aspect ratio (will add black borders top+bottom for u)

Plent of guide to the left

    depends on a) PAL/NTSC and b) 4:3/16:9

    720*444 16:9 NTSC
    720*532 16:9 PAL

    720*332 4:3 NTSC
    720*400 4:3 PAL

so you want to use the above resolution as "center custom size" with a 720x576 (PAL) or 720x480 (NTSC) frame.

you must have beaten me to the submit button Roderz!

The FPS is probably funky because it's a generated file. shouldn't be a problem encoding to either 25fps or 30fps.

  7. Thank you for the response. I tried your suggestion and it did work. The video quality is a little degraded. Is that because it had to be resized to fit the aspect ratio? If the original avi file is closer to the aspect ratio required would that be better?

Also, the file size of the original avi file is 298kb while the new mpeg2 format file is 24mb. Is that normal?

first, is it possible to put up a screen grab from the mpeg, and second, what bitrate did you use when encoding?
