  1. Here is an article from money.com that pretty much sums up what everyone has known all along...

The Recording Industry Association of America, the industry's main lobbying group, has filed more than 3,400 lawsuits against indviduals who allegedly downloaded music from the Internet for free. To date roughly 600 them have settled, with the target agreeing to stop downloading music illegally and paying an average of $3,000.

It's no surprise, then, that an RIAA spokesman suggested that the litigation -- and the general awareness about illegal downloads -- is helping to drive the recent boost in CD sales.

    But music industry analysts disagreed.

CD sales dropped in recent years, they said, because the economy slumped, leaving music to compete with video games, DVDs and other forms of entertainment for consumer dollars. They noted, too, the dearth of fresh talent as the teen pop fad began to wane around 2000.

Mayfield said a similar situation arose in the early 1980s after the red-hot Disco craze fizzled without any new genre emerging. Then, as now, there was much hand-wringing over consumers getting music for free -- via blank cassettes, not computers.

It's a way to back up your mp3's using a lossy analog codec on a small form-factor linear datapath.

    Or something like that.

What the hell are they talkng about????? '80's music is one of the popular eras for music. If that were not true, why are there so many specialty 80's stations popping up?

I can remember getting my first cassette player and sitting there listening to the chart show on a sunday night with a blank tape recording the tunes of the day to hear later on at my leisure.
Guess pirating started early for some of us.... Then again wasn't a market in the school playground for bootleg tapes as everyone already had them....
Strange how recording music is called pirating yet if you record a TV show its time shifting....

Part of the reason 80's music is so popular is people that listened to 50's and 60's music are dying. When I was a kid 70's disco was the worst thing imaginable, now look at the disco revival. Some of the fasions are back too.
I belive that the industry is adjusting the stats, to justify there actions.

Yeah, when I was at University the school radio station had what they called the "Saturday Night Six-Pack". Six albums back-to-back, no blather, no nothing. Had a TEAC reel-to-reel in those pre-cassette days. Penniless college students have to establish priorities, one LP or a case of beer, hmmm. Decisions, decisions. How about several of each, please?
